God Still Makes Stars | Marcus Mecum

I want to be considerate of your time turn with me to Philippians chapter 2 and let's look at verse 13 for it is God who works in you to Will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose everybody say his good purpose do everything without grumbling or arguing so that you may become blameless and pure children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation then you will shine among them like the stars in the sky can underline that if you'd like that's what I'm going to talk about as you hold firmly to the words of life when you look throughout the scripture it's very impossible to miss that God has always spoken and guided us through the Stars really through all of creation God in many ways uses it not speaking about astrology I'm speaking about just how God uses all kinds of different ways to speak to us to get our attention you could find it in Genesis chapter 15 when God calls Abraham and he says I'm going to give you a picture of your future I want you to get out of the tent and I want you to go out and I want you to start to count the stars in the sky and so he starts to count one two three 4 50 100 200 finally at some point he gives up says God I can't count all the stars they're innumerable and God says you're finally starting to get it what I want to do in your life there's no possible way you could ever calculate it we would know surrounding the birth of Jesus that there was the signs in the heaven or that star that settled above that small town of Bethlehem in Acts chapter 2 with Joel's prophecy it says there's going to be wonders in the heavens above in Luke 21 Jesus himself said there will be signs in the Sun the moon the stars and in the end times in Joshua chapter 10 God would cause the sun to stand still to confirm with Joshua I'm with you I'm for you I've got your back keep on moving forward in Revelation chap 22 and verse 16 it says that Jesus is our bright and Morning Star in Revelation 2 and verse 6 it says to him who overcomes I give the power over Nations not over individuals not cities not even regions but power over over Nations the Morning Star is the first star that catches the Rays of a new Dawning day it carries the message to us that Daybreak is coming a new day is Dawning a new day is coming and so we find ourselves in Philippians chapter 2 where it says that God wants to cause us to shine like the stars in the midst of a perverse and wicked generation God says I want to raise you up to shine in the mid mid of all of that I want to use you to be like a star in the middle of all that Darkness I want to use you to stand out to be especially bright that there's something about your life that no matter how dark the world gets you stand out and you become that shining guiding star in their life and so I want to talk to you about how God still makes stars in NASA there are millions of stars according to NASA there's millions of stars born every day in our universe an average of one new star is born per year another star dies every year in our Milky Way NASA would go on to say that there's approximately a hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe so there's a hundred billion stars being born and dying every year that corresponds to 275 million stars being born every day it goes on to say that all stars are the balance of two forces and this just simplifies it but the first force is an inward force of gravity so there has to be something inside of that star that pulls and then there has to be an outward Force generate generated or a push and if those two things are equal a star is born and can remain stable so for a Star to be born there must be these two forces that balance a push push and a pull a gravitational force that pulls things in and equal to that Force there must be an outward Force given or a push within the star if those two balances are struck and if the raw materials are available the raw star making materials are available A Star is Born if not a supernova occurs and this is what happens when a star dies the core of the star collapses it causes the star to collapse explode and die two reasons are given for a star dying number one a star will begin to steal the matter from another star it will begin to Rob another star of its ability to continue to shine and it will pull all that it can from that star and it will accumulate and that star thinks it's going to get greater and greater but it actually becomes a dwarf star and that star because of all the matter that it's accumulated collapses explodes and dies another way that a star dies is it just continues to push out it gives out fuel over and over and as a result it collapses explodes and dies so even the Stars know there must be a push and there must be a pool if a star does nothing but pull and does nothing but take and does nothing but continue to make everything about what it's Gathering and what it's pulling in that star will explode collapse and die but if a star does nothing but push and give and continue to sacrifice and never pulls anything back in it runs out of fuel it burns out and it dies so as it is with the Stars so it is with every one of us we have to balance those two forces there must be a push and there must be a pull and Philippian tells us if you can strike this balance you can shine like the stars in the midst of a perverse and wicked and crooked generation or like Isaiah would say God will arise within you and you'll rise and shine and that your light will come and that the glory of the Lord can rise upon you and my message today is simple that God still makes stars but you've got to have a balance if you do nothing but pull pull and Pull and Pull and there's no push or you do nothing but push and push and there's no pull the potential dies out that dream dies out that future dies out and the brightness that God has placed on the inside of you over time begins to grow more and more dim and you collapse you burn out or you Fade Out all over the place through the years when you serve God you see people and you wonder what happened to them they were so on fire they seemed to have such a a great way about them they seem to be so in love with God they worshiped and they were hungry for the word they couldn't get enough of church what happened to that person and it's the same thing every time either the person that they're the person that takes and takes and takes and pulls they never contribute they never add value they never give out as a result it DFS them or they're the person that gives and gives and gives and never refuses and they eventually burn out and I say this because there are young people that are here that were at the forward conference and the goal of the conference was that you pull on everything that God would want for you to have that you pull on the anointing that you pull on this ministry and what God has placed on the inside of it that you pulled on the the word and the presence of God this week and the goal is not that you stay here refueled and refreshed and doing nothing but romanticizing how great it's been here the goal is you've been filled up you've pulled all that in so you can go back to that Church go back to that youth ministry go back to that place that God's called you and now you got to go back and you got to push and pour yourself out is what Paul went on to say but for others of you you sacrificed you served I saw all of you and I know a little bit of what it takes to do the things that you do it's so important that you also let God refuel you and refill you and refresh you so Paul would go on to say that this warped and crooked generation inside of it all inside of all the dark things that were seeing God still wants to make stars and so there's raw star making material all around us you don't know it but sitting next to you there is a star in the making there is the raw materials all over this place and if God could pull back the veil and we could see what he sees if we could see the potential if we could see the gifts if we could see the call if we could see all the things that God would see we probably wouldn't treat one another the way that we do we'd probably think about things a little bit different and so four quick thoughts that Philippians gives us on the raw star making material that's inside of every one of us number one it says God works in us to fulfill his good purpose everybody say his good purpose the word works is the Greek word enerio and it means divine energy that produces noticeable change Moment by moment energo is at work to fulfill his good purpose it's not at work to fulfill our purpose it's not at work to fulfill something that we want there's something about that Divine inerio on the inside of us that's there working Moment by moment to produce noticeable change to fulfill his good purpose Romans would call this the mind of the spirit in other words the mind mind of the spirit the Divine enerio on the inside of us has a determination of its own the Holy Spirit has a mind he has thoughts he has ideas he he has things that he wants us to do choices he wants us to make that's the voice behind us saying this is the way I want you to walk walk ye in it this is that which orders our steps and also orders our stops there's something that we have to pull on called The Divine enerio it's working on the inside of us in Acts chapter 15 it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us in other words they said we're not going to go out and just try to make some random decision we've got to get the mind of God we've got to figure out what is it that God would want us to do and so it seemed good to the Holy Spirit they got the mind of God concerning what they were supposed to do and in Acts chapter 20 it says they went compelled by the Holy Spirit to Jerusalem they pulled on that Divine enerio and then what happened it compelled them it pushed them to say I want you to go reach the city of Jerusalem and you never reach a city you never reach a community you can never do anything that's great for God if there's not something on the inside of you that's compelling you to reach that City Paul would say that there's going to be difficulty he would say that there's going to be imprisonment there's going to be all kinds of things that are going to happen when I get to Jerusalem but yet the Holy Spirit was compelling him it didn't matter how difficult it was going to be the Holy Spirit had clearly in great detail told Paul what he was supposed to do in Acts 13:36 it says for David served the purpose of God in his own generation the only generation David could serve was his own generation he couldn't serve the purposes of God in Noah's generation he couldn't serve the purposes of God in Abraham's generation or Moses's he had to serve the purpose of God in his generation and then he died we can only serve what is we can't serve what was we can't serve how it used to be we can't serve oh those were the good old days those were the great days those were the great times we can only serve the purpose of God with what is in our own generation and when you get that that my job is to say there's something at work in me to fulfill his good purpose not in some other place but right here right now in my day in my hour God has a purpose he wants me to fulfill and when you grab a hold of that that's like grabbing a hold of a 220 volt wire you can't let go of it and something begins to flow through you because you've got his good purpose there's just something about knowing I'm doing what he wants me to do it's a pull you feel it's a call you feel and it pulls you close and then you pull close to him you draw close to him he draws close to you and the whole point is I've got to pull on him not so I can stay where I am but so he can push me out to accomplish what he wants me to do and that shine like the stars in the midst of my generation God still makes Stars it goes on to say do everything without grumbling there's not an emphasis on how talented you should be I was watching Reggie and I was watching pastor and I always watch all these people and the talent stick when in heaven when God was going around he gave all this talent to these people and then he took that Talent stick and he feel like he just jumped right over me anybody know what I'm talking about I thought years ago that sooner or later I'll be so confident sooner or later I'll get to this place where I can be so confident in what I'm supposed to do and I've never one time ever felt I thought well maybe I'll get closer to God or maybe at some point but the closer I get to him the more useless I feel but there is something about his good purpose and it doesn't take a lot of talent and it doesn't take this crazy amount of ability if you've got it use it for God's glory but here it says if you want to shine like the stars you have to have something in you that's doing things without grumbling isn't that funny grumbling means silent resist resistance and resentment it speaks of an ungrateful spirit or a negative spirit in Isaiah 14 Satan when he fell from heaven it says he was a fallen star the brightest star in all of Heaven outside of God look at it fail what NASA calls that star was dfed that star died why because it's what the sin of ingratitude looks like nothing was ever enough for him that star nothing was ever great enough nothing was ever good enough just silent resistance silent resentment just that constant sense of I want more I'll Ascend to the most high I'll be like the most high God and nothing about him understood there's got to be a gratefulness in you there's got to be a gratitude in you to me it starts with something as simple are you forgiven did he save you did he redeem you did he take you away from that place called hell did he do anything in your life to change you to bring you where you're at and you got to keep going back to that place everything since that place I can't even begin to say how thankful I am because I'm so thankful for that and that alone the raw star making material that God looks for for is are you thankful when God goes to make stars he looks for grateful people Colossians 2 verse 7 says you overflow with thankfulness it depicts something that pours forth from your heart that there's no effort it's so strong that it's difficult or impossible to hold hold back or stop it thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you you almost don't even know what other words to give to it you're just so grateful for what God has done so the Divine inerio is only safe and secure in a thankful heart God's looking for people that he can make to shine he's looking for people that he can do great things for not just in church life but in business in all kinds of different spheres but what he wants to do is say there really is nothing more beauti whatever you think is great whatever you think is beautiful there's just something about the shine of gratitude that comes forth from your life and there's something that just dorfs people when and gratitude grips a hold of them and so I want to challenge you all across this place to never lose the gratitude for what God is doing in this church in this ministry it's not normal what God does here I work with everything that I am and we're over there and I think Seven Hills is the greatest Church in the world I wouldn't be the pastor of that church if I didn't believe that so you're a close second to me but the truth is we we cannot have what you have here you cannot do what you do here in the way that you do it and set back and think it's normal or this is just supposed to happen or this is just how it is it's not true you know this but it is so abnormal what God is doing here and I just want to challenge you to never lose that spirit of gratitude that Spirit of being thankful thank God for what he's doing with you thank God for what he's doing in this place can you take about 15 seconds and just say thank you Father we thank you for the anointing the ministry the sacrifices in this place God has raised you up to shine because that's the spirit in this place there's not a spirit of arrogance there's not a spirit of Pride there's a spirit of we should have this there's always been a spirit of just humility and gratitude and it speaks so much to so many number three it says do everything without arguing in the Greek that's an inward criticism it's a picture of someone that's unteachable they have a madeup mind no curiosity no openness closed hearts and a closed Spirit 1st Samuel 25 gives a definition of wickedness that I never seen before it's talking about Abigail and nabal and it says that nabal was wicked listen to what it says because no one could talk to him there was just something about him he refused to be taught he refused to be open in his mind no one could tell him anything so the Bible says do everything without arguing don't let yourself fall into being unteachable don't allow yourself to fall into that mindset that you lose your curiosity be an eternal student wake up every day and say God take me to school again let me learn something let me see something I've not seen before let me catch something that I've never caught before I don't want to be destroyed because I lack knowledge in some area I want to continue to learn as much as I possibly can why so I can pull on the wisdom of other people around me that's what the Bible says by the way in Proverbs and all you're getting get understanding that wisdom is the principle thing that it's more Priceless than rubies or any precious stone Daniel 12:3 says those who are wise will shine like the brightness of Heaven you shine when you're wise you shine when you have the wisdom of God in your life you are DED and dfed when you're unteachable and you don't see how much God wants to show you and teach you you should never stop growing you should never stop expanding you should never stop saying God I want to see things I've never seen go play say I've never gone and it happens because you have a teachable spirit when you do that God goes looking and he says okay I want to make some Stars right there it is there is a teachable spirit in that person and that's someone I can raise up to shine like the stars in a mid midst of a generation and finally it goes on to say to hold fast to the word of life I got many of you know my story uh many of you maybe don't but I didn't grow up in church I got saved when I was 16 years old I got saved in a little Pentecostal church about 70 members um I'd never heard John 3:16 I'd never heard of David and Goliath I'd never even heard the word saved knew nothing about any of this stuff had no clue that things like this existed didn't even know that that there was anything like this I remember the night that I was invited to this church and I got saved they said something like this to me they said if you want to go to heaven and not hell raise your hand so I raised my hand I thought I don't know that's makes sense to me and my friend that was there next to me said put your hand down you're embarrassing me I said you can go to hell if you want to I'm going to heaven but they gave me a little New Testament I didn't know what it was at the time cu the only Bible I'd ever seen was one of those big gold leaf things on my grandparents coffee table that was like real spooky and so so they gave me this little I still have it to this day and they said you're a Christian now you have to read this I'd never read a book in my whole life but I knew that my life changed that day at that altar I didn't know how to explain it I didn't know what it meant I couldn't have given you the words I couldn't have given you an explanation I just knew that my life would never be the same so I went home and I started reading that Bible all my friends kind of walked the other way and on Friday night Saturday they're partying they're doing their thing they're having fun they're doing whatever and I turned that bedroom in my basement into a Bible College and I fell in love with the word of God there's been so many times I wanted to run from everything that this is everything that this I pulled on the call of God in that life and uh at that time in my life and I I felt it and I sensed it and I knew that there was something there but I didn't know how it would all happen and years I wanted to walk away from it years I was hurt by church or hurt by this thing or disappointed by that but I learned to hold fast to the word in that time I learned that if you'll just stay in the scripture if you'll just stay in the word if you'll just keep opening it up and just keep your focus on that hold fast to the word and I believe to this day that the reason I'm here in a place like this is not because of anything that most people would think it's because God looked down and he saw that 16-year-old kid in the ghetto in some little nowhere House mom died of a drug overdose dad an atheist to this day he's looked down and he just saw somebody that loved the Bible I love the scripture I didn't have anything else to lean on I didn't have anything else to pull on I didn't know how else to get where God wanted me to go but he gave me that book and I prized that book and I've loved that book and I still my favorite thing to do is to open up the Bible and nobody around no one's even close and all the sudden I begin to look back at how God has Raised Me Up In some ways not because of the things that most people would think but because I learned along the way it is his Divine inerio it is about his purpose and if you'll stay thankful if you'll stay teachable and if you'll love that book God can raise you up to shine like the stars in the midst of a perverse generation I love what Martin Luther said he said the Bible is alive it speaks to me it has hands it lays hold of me it has feet it runs after me the Bible heard a story and I'm ending with this man's name is William mcferson in the 1800s he was in an explosion just a a ter terrible accident and as a result of this explosion it almost killed him he survived but his face was disfigured he lost his eyes lost his hands and after he recovered the thing that he regretted the most was not the loss of his hands was not even the loss of his eyes was that he couldn't read the Bible and so he had heard of a lady in England that learned how to read byra with her lips and so he thought maybe if I can order a Bible written in Braille I could learn like she did I could learn to maybe take my lips and touch it to the the book and maybe I could read the Bible and so he orders the Bible it finally comes in and he tries to read it but his lips had also the nerve endings had been destroyed so he couldn't feel the Braille with his lips but he kept trying and working and so much so that his lips became cracked and bloodied because he just wanted to read the Bible so much eventually he's about to give up and before he does his tongue unintentionally slips out to lit the bloody lips and it touches the Braille and he thinks to himself I wonder if I could learn to read the Braille with the tip of my tongue it takes him a year and a half to learn how to read Braille with his tongue but by the end of his life he had read the Bible from cover to cover four times with nothing but his ((applause)) tongue and for those young people that are here from forward conference there's probably nothing that I have to give you other than if you'll take that Bible and you'll shut the door and you'll go into a lonely place and you'll fall in love with that Bible I don't care what it takes you don't give up on it don't walk away from it don't say you don't get it don't say just stay in the Bible hold fast to the word of God and God will raise you up in whatever way he wants to to shine like the stars in the midst of a perverse generation could you bow your head and close your eyes maybe you're here here today and you'd say Marcus I'm in a an aimless place maybe you're in a confused place you feel an absence of purpose You' say I don't sense that Divine inerio I don't have a sense of what God wants me to do I don't have a grasp on his good purpose listen God is so faithful it's Moment by moment it's not all crazy at once but Moment by moment even in a service like this God can produce some noticeable change in your life but you came today and you'd say Marcus I sense that I'm in that confused place that aimless place I'm not living with a sense of purpose you love God but you don't have that sense of purpose if that's you would you just quickly just slip your hand up just let me see it just quickly lift that hand up thank you just aimless just no sense of purpose you can put your hands down maybe you're here and you'd say Marcus I struggle with ingratitude how do you know if you struggle with ingratitude there's not peace with where God has you right now why is God doing that for them why is he working in their life in that way that's the sin of ingratitude and it comes up in all of us and we have to learn to push it away you're here today you love God but you'd say man I've been struggling with that sin of ingratitude if that's you would you just quickly slip your hand up as high as you can just quickly slip it up thank you thank you thank you so many hands praise the name of Jesus you can put that hand down you're here today and you'd say Marcus I'm good in those areas I have a sense of purpose I'm grateful but you find yourself being a little closed off you found yourself because of being hurt or because of being disappointed you've not been open and teachable like you maybe even have an argumentativeness about you just a desire to defend but you've showed up here today and you say Marcus I I want that teachable spirit that you talked about I want that that desire to be an eternal student if that's you would you slip your hand up just quick L as high as you can so many of your hands that's beautiful I believe God's going to do that today then finally you'd say Marcus I have had a diminished hunger for God's word I've just not been in the scriptures I've not been holding fast to the word like I should if that's you you say my Bible reading my studying the scriptures my my daily disciplines to be in the word have not been been what they supposed to and I'm going to pray for all of you in just a minute but you'd say Marcus that's me today that spoke to me lift your hand up as high as you can incredible we're all guilty of it but we're not leaving here with that we're not leaving here with that Spirit we're leaving here with an understanding it's as simple as can be God is going to work his good purpose in your life our job is to stay grateful stay teachable and hold fast to his word word I'm going to count to three if you raise your hand for any of those points any one of them on the count of three this is not for any other reason so you can know when to move if God's been pulling on your heart you lifted your hand at any one of those points I want you to quickly on the count of three just get out of that seat as quickly as you can and let's come down to this Altar and I believe God is going to meet you here in a special special way one 2 3 quickly would you come come on can we stand up to our feet together as a church can we worship let's sing this together thank Des serve you're the name ((music playing)) of would you put the hand on the person next to you and would you say this with me can we just pull on him over these next few ((music playing)) moments father we're here to pull on that divine power power today we can't do it without you we're not so foolish to think we can finish in the flesh what's began in the spirit we know how you've begun the good work and we know you're faithful to finish it but it's our job to pull on you today and so in Jesus mighty name let's all say this together say ((music playing)) God right now in this moment give me peace give me Clarity no confusion help me stay focused on your good purpose to fulfill your good purpose push me aside over these next few moments and help me to focus on your good purpose in Jesus name now say this say God deliver me from that sin of ingratitude free me wash me of it I push it down I push it away I'm at peace with where you have me today I know you have me in the right place and say father cause me to be teachable send me the right people send me mentors send me men and women of God that have gone ahead of me that can show me that can pour out into my life in Jesus name give me the wisdom of God give me the wisdom of God in Jesus mighty name and now say God like never before let it be Indescribable let me today have a new Hunger for your word that like that man I would taste it and never be able to get enough of it in Jesus mighty name now father I pray for every person in this room that you'll raise raise them up to shine like the stars thank you for what you've done in this church thank you for every youth ministry every church thank you for every person that's here raise them up to shine like the stars that in the midst of this dark perverse and crooked generation there would be something to look to Grateful people teachable people people that love your word that are living for your good purpose in Jesus mighty name name can we give the Lord a big praise together come on can we be thankful we honor you today we do Jesus we give you all the honor all within us thank you for the shine that you're putting on our life with every eye closed every head bowed you're here and you'd say Marcus Jesus Christ is not the Lord of my life everything that we've talked about this is what it's about you don't have to leave lost you don't have to leave broken you don't have to leave the same way you came in you need forgiveness you need a new beginning you need a new start Jesus is not the Lord of your life you're not saved you're not a Christian you've not put your trust in Jesus Christ but today you'd say Marcus I don't want to leave the same way that I came came on the count of three I'm going to invite you to lift your hand you say why should I lift my hand that's just you saying yes that's you saying yes I'm not leaving here the same that I came in I believe a miracle happens when you lift your hand the Bible calls it being born again you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart which we're going to do all that but a miracle happens old things pass away behold All Things become new God takes out that Heart of Stone and he gives you a brand new heart it is a beautiful thing but it begins by you just saying yes it begins by you opening up the door of your heart and saying God go ahead and come in to my life in my heart I'm yours I surrender all to you just like I am my sin my mess everything about me I give it to you if that's you you want that new beginning on the count of three lift that hand up one 2 3 throw that hand up as high as you can with hands lifted keep that hand raised put another hand on your heart don't put it down this is between you and God I'm going to lead you in this prayer we're all going to pray with you but this is really a prayer from your heart to God's heart that's where change takes place is in the heart it's from the inside out that God does the work and so let's say this say Jesus thank you for dying on a cross for shedding your blood for me you paid the price and now today I get the opportunity to come before you and just say I need you forgive me I Repent I confess I've messed up I've sinned I've fallen short but today I receive Grace I receive Mercy I receive your best for my life in Jesus mighty name say I believe that you Jesus are God's only son and that he raised you from the dead I give you my life now and we all said a big amen come on let's give the Lord one more good hand clap together God bless ((music playing)) you now look hold on we're going to take a minute right here cuz I sense something the Lord wants to fill some people with the power of the Holy Spirit here this morning so I want I want her to sing this song and I want this team to sing this song and I want you right where you're standing to just lift your hands and begin to worship God all over this room and just say holy spirit fill me this morning seal me you know it's a Bible verse you're sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise when the Holy Spirit comes he seals you in a way that changed my life changed Marcus's life Chang changed everybody's life who's ever experienced that so right now just begin with gratitude as he's preached one of the greatest messages preach right now to yourself and say Lord I praise you just begin to open your mouth and verbally worship Jesus give him personal praise because stars are being born all over this room stars are being born at every campus God is allowing you now just to begin to get into his presence press on in and begin to worship him get a praise phrase what's that thank you Jesus I praise you God for forgiving me I know that I've been forgiven I worship you now just begin to sing it it was my cross thank him for that live in thank him for that and now my life is yours and I will sing of your goodness forever more Worthy is your name let him touch you this morning let him fill you with the Holy Spirit this morning he's so near he's long for this day you're full of good purpose you're full of good and Divine Purpose it'll take the anointing of the Holy Spirit to use you make yourself available and now my shame my shame is gone stand just close your eyes and worship him let this song Sink and speak for you let it sink in you goes on and I will sing sing goodness forever more worthy Worthy is your name that name changed my life that name gave me a purpose a good purpose I was going no where I had nothing but that name fail me that name changed my life Worthy is your oh singing with
