The Fear of the Lord Cancels All Other Fears
Transcript
((music playing)) I enjoy being with you more than you'll ever know. I love coming and teaching the word of the Lord and being with you. I really mean that. This is such a joy for me and thank you for being my wonderful partner, my family. I pray the Lord today will really use his beautiful word to bless all of you and you watching every one of you.
I want to talk to you today about the fear of the Lord. This incredible power in our life that motivates us to love him, to serve him, to follow him. It's a desire like David said, "Lord, teach me to fear your name." It's a longing in us to know his his awe and his wonder and his love.
Hallelujah. There's much in the Bible about this. And I want to pray with you right now. Father, I thank you for your word. I give you praise for what you're about to show us. Lord, I pray you'd use this to bring us closer to you than ever before in Jesus name.
God's people said, "Amen." Remember David prayed, "Lord, teach me to fear your name." I love this. In Isaiah 8:13, it says, "Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself. Let him be your fear and let him be your dread." It's quite interesting that right before that in verse 12 it says say you not a conspiracy to all them to whom this people shall say conspiracy neither fury their fear nor be afraid sanctify the Lord and let him be your fear.
So the moment the fear of the Lord comes into your heart, all other fears disappear. Because if the fear of God is not in you, then you will fear disease and poverty and the enemies out there and so on. So the fear of the Lord cancels all other fears because he said, "Don't be afraid of what they're saying out there, what they're doing out there."
It says, "Neither fear you their fear, nor be afraid. Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself. Let him be your fear. Let him be your dread." Now, a lot of people don't understand the fear of the world because they think about fear like I'm I'm afraid. Well, there's three things we have to look at.
Number one, there's natural fear. Natural fear is when we react to danger. Then there's sinful fear. Sinful fear is when we do not trust the Lord. That's sinful fear. But then there's the fear of God. And that is so powerful. And this is what I want to talk to you about because it's about reverence.
It's about reverence. It's not about being afraid. It's about awe. You know, we stand in awe of the Lord. You know that song, I stand in awe of your Lord. That's what it means. The fear of the Lord has to do with being in awe of him, revering him.
In Philippians 2 and verse 12, Paul the Apostle says something quite interesting here. He says, "Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling." Now, he wasn't saying work out your salvation by being scared and afraid that you make a mistake.
No, no. With awe, with reverence. Work out your salvation with the fear of the Lord. With the fear of the Lord. Remember Isaiah, God said, "Let me be your fear. Let me be your dread. Be in awe of me. Stand in awe and all other fears will disappear."
So, we are in awe. Every time you sing this song, I stand I stand in awe of you. You're you're saying to him, "Lord, I rever you. I fear you. Okay, so it has nothing to do with natural fear or sinful fear. It's the fear of God. And this is what people lack today.
They sing the song, but they're not really living it because it has to do with God's character. God's character. The fear of the Lord gives us a right understanding of who he is. His real character. His nature. of his nature. Oh dear Lord, let them see this in Jesus name.
I think this is why David began to cry for it. Lord, teach me to fear your name. Teach me to fear you. Because he saw his character and holiness and love and awe and wonder. Wanted to know more about the Lord. Who is he? His his depth. So uh uh some people I think have a wrong view of God.
They see him as unjust. They see him as unmerciful. You know, that's that uh gentleman in Luke. Let's just go to the Gospel of Luke. Remember the man who came to the Lord and he said, "Oh, you're a you're a you're a hard man. I know you're a very hard man."
Well, he he he he had a wrong view of the Lord. He he said, "For I fear them." Remember the one the the story of the talents? The one that had the one talent and buried it. He said, "I feared you because you are an austere man. Thou takest up that thou lay not down and you reap what you did not sow."
So he he had a whole wrong view of God. He he saw God as unjust, unmerciful and and you know he was afraid. So he said, "I fear you. I feared you. So when the Lord said uh you know uh well he called that servant you know that whole uh parable is in Luke 19.
You can read it for yourself. And uh it says uh this then another came saying Lord behold here is your pound I've kept that I've kept in a napkin for because I feared you. you're an austere man. So, you know, he didn't do anything with it. So, take your take take your your money back.
And the Lord rebuked him and called him what? Wicked. Because he did not fear the Lord. He didn't fear the Lord. The the the the the uh fear that he was displaying this man when he said, "I was afraid is self-centered." But the fear of God is God centered.
You see God rather than yourself. So he said, "I feared you. I feared you." Self-centered. But the fear of God is you see how the Lord is so beautiful, so awesome, mighty, glorious, holy. Yes, you do. You know, so this is a great um how shall I say it?
It's the greatest motivation to fear the Lord is the greatest motiv motivation of the Christian life. It's the it's what motivates us to be Christians to walk with him because here we we have the right attitudes towards the Lord. And this is what is so important. This is that holy intimacy.
You see him as he is. You see him as he is when you fear him. You see him as he is. And this is a holy intimacy with the Lord that will mark your life like it marked the lives of of Abraham for example or Moses and the prophets like when you read about about Abraham is a very interesting uh portion here in in James 2:23 [clears throat] and I hope you're you're enjoying this.
It says, "And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God." It was imputed unto him for righteousness. He was called the friend of God. But but what what brought about that intimacy? Why did he believe? Why did the trust? Because he saw God's glory. He he saw God's heart and he stood in awe of the Lord.
He he knew his character. See, it all has to do with knowing God's character. You fear him because you see his holiness and his steadfast love. You stand in awe. You stand in awe. So, and you see it with Moses, you know. Same thing with Moses. Um, now some people have have uh have a wrong kind of familiarity with the Lord. uh uh Abraham, Moses, you know, here's Abraham called the friend of God.
Moses in Deuteronomy 34:10, it says that God, let me just read that with you. Come on, let's go to Deuteronomy 34 verse 10. I love I love this. It says, "And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face."
Don't you want God to know you like that? Don't you want to know him like that too? But but this is not the the the the kind of uh uh thing that you see today. The wrong familiarity today. You see it, it's cheap. That's not the fear of the Lord because it brings God to to your level.
It it brings God down rather than where he is. And that's not godly fear because people want to bring God down to their level. you know, he's my heavenly father, but you know, he's my daddy. And so they talk like he's their neighbor. No, no, no. Godly fear.
We stand in awe. In awe. Um, and I don't believe we will ever know God intimately until we know his awe. You will never know his intimacy. You will never know his wonder until you know his awe. You stand in awe of the Lord because only that frankly will cause you to be accepted in his sight in Hebrews 12 28.
You know if we if we we want to be accepted we we have to come with that reverence. Wherefore, it says, this is Hebrews 12:28, wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved. Let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
You can't even serve him without fearing him. And you know what? Anyone who serves him and doesn't fear him will not last. He just won't last. He will end up falling into some sin or messing up some somehow with something. Who knows? Who knows? And walk away from from the Lord.
But the but the fear of the Lord will bring repentance. Even if that man, you know, weakens in some area, he will repent. He knows how to repent because of of the fear of the of the Lord. God will restore. God always restores those who fear him. He but he never restores those who don't fear him.
There's a lot about that in the Bible. Read read your Bible. Read your Bible. It says those who fear him will lack nothing. So it's in the Bible. It's we need the fear of the Lord again. Okay? Because we don't see it a whole lot anymore. And it says for our God is a consuming fire.
And when when people read it, oh no, no, no, no. It talks about reverence. Reverend, if you don't rever him, he won't accept you. So, we have to serve God acceptably so God can accept us with reverence and godly fear. The one thing I want more than anything else is to be accepted on that day.
To be accepted every day, but especially on that day that God will accept me. And you know it's the fear of the Lord will cause us to hate sin. If you hate sin, it proves to you you fear the Lord. People who don't fear the Lord love their sin.
People who fear the Lord hate their sin. That's the difference between a Christian and an unbeliever. An unbeliever loves his sin. An unbeliever will not repent for his sin. The believer who hates his sin has just proven to himself that he's a Christian, that he's a child of God who fears the Lord.
So fearing the Lord will cause people to hate sin. And that's all in the Bible. Okay? Because let let's go to Proverbs 16. [cough and clears throat] There's a lot in the Bible that I want to share with you. about the fear of the Lord today because you know I thought we need this.
I need to bring the teaching to God. It says by mercy this is verse 6 Proverbs 16 by mercy and truth iniquity is purged and by the fear of the Lord man depart from evil. By the fear of the Lord man depart from evil. So when people fear the Lord, they will not sin and do something uh horrible and and and sinful because they will they will hate their sin and they will not says they depart from it.
They they they depart from evil. And here's something amazing. I I also found when you when you study the word and you read the Bible, you notice that that every man who fear the Lord had a mighty prayer life. If you want to have a a a a strong prayer life, it's fearing the Lord.
Uh Daniel, for example, in Daniel 9, uh he says to the Lord, he says, "Lord," and I love this, you know, I love this. He he says, "Lord, you're you are you are awesome." Let's just go to Daniel. All right, one more time using my iPad. Sometimes it takes you somewhere else, you know.
Daniel 9. All right, here we go. Verse four. And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, Oh Lord, the great and dreadful God. That word dreadful is Hebrew awesome. The great and awesome God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him and to them that keep his commandments.
So he stood in awe of the of of the Lord and and had an amazing prayer life. And look at you know even even the Lord Jesus you know this is this so touches me so deeply that the Lord feared his own heavenly father. It says so in in Hebrews.
But look look at John. Just pay attention in the gospel of John uh 17. Look how how he addresses his father in verse 11 for example. He he calls him holy father and now I'm no more in the world but these are in the world. I come to the holy father in verse 25.
Let's just go to verse 25. It's precious how the lord himself feared his father. So he says, "Oh righteous father, holy father, righteous father." He he so stood in awe of his own father to call him, you know, holy father, righteous father. And in in Hebrews, let's go to Hebrews chapter 5 and verse 7.
Verse 7. Uh it says who in the days of his flesh when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death and was heard in that he feared he was heard in that he feared Jesus himself feared the Lord feared his heavenly father that's to me so so remarkable so awesome so awesome When people do not respect the Lord, it really upsets me when they don't when they don't call him Lord Jesus.
Dear Jesus, when they when they address him like he's their next door neighbor, you know, it really bothers me a lot. Bothers me a lot. And, you know, they they they let people use his name in vain and don't correct them. I have and I always do. You have to correct because that that's one name we love and adore and honor.
We should not let anyone speak that name in in in in a mocking way or a dis disrespectful way. Never. Never. That's our precious Lord. That's our redeemer. And and I'm so strong on this. I'm a Jesus man. You're a Jesus person. We must honor him all the time.
Everywhere we go. Never be ashamed of mentioning his name. Never. Never. I was in Hollywood years ago, you know, at a big event and there was a lot of people from from Hollywood. This was years ago in Los Angeles at the Central Plaza Hotel. They asked me to pray.
This was a big fundraiser for the police department and I was there. They asked me to come and pray and they were raising funds for the families that lost uh policemen, you know, and they were helping a lot of these families. So, uh some of those there people that I knew invited me to come and pray and here I am.
And I said to those individuals, I said, I pray in Jesus' name because I'm always like that. I said, I pray in Jesus name. And when I did, I was amazed at the response. They all said, "Amen." And the and the leader said, "Of course they they because you have you have to tell them.
You have to tell them." Would you believe it if I tell you I preached at a funeral of a man that I knew in Los Angeles who was not a Christian, but I preached the gospel. I preached the gospel because he was a friend of mine. And I preached the gospel to him many times.
And when I finished preaching the gospel, the people stood up and clapped because I was bold about the Lord and salvation. I clearly preached the gospel. You know, a lot of unbelievers want us to be real in ourselves. No. No. Never be ashamed that you belong to Jesus.
Never. Never. Be be bold. Be bold. He He's the king of kings and lord of lords. And people will will respect you for that. When you stand up for the Lord, they'll respect you for that. Believe me. And even the even the Lord, it says in Hebrews 5 uh 7, feared the Lord, his father.
We must fear God, the father, the son, and the holy spirit. You can't even serve the Lord without his his fear in him. It's impossible. Impossible because serving the Lord and the fear of of of the Lord go hand in hand. Look what it says in Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 13.
That's why I told you earlier anyone who is in ministry and does not fear the Lord will not last is that thou shalt fear the Lord thy God and serve him. You'll you'll fear him and then serve him. That's Deuteronomy 6:13. You'll see it also in uh chapter 10:12.
And it's all over the old covenant. So, why did Noah build the ark? Was it to to protect the the the animals? Was he building it for the animals? No. No. It says he was moved in fear. Let's let's look let's for the saving of his family. But it say was the the fear of God that moved him.
So, uh, Hebrews 11 verse 7. Let's look at it. Come on. It's all there. By faith, Noah being warned of God of things not seen as he had moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house. What fear? The fear of the Lord by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. just like Abraham.
So even Paul talks about how he preached the gospel because of godly fear. You know here here you see you cannot serve God without fearing him. Noah didn't build the ark to save the animals because he built because he feared God for the saving of his own family.
And it says in 2 Corinthians 5 verse 11, this is very very special to me. I love this part, this uh part. Knowing the terror of the Lord or the fear of the Lord. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men. This is this is a headline in my life.
This is headline. Knowing the fear of the Lord, I preach the gospel. I don't do it for any other reason because God called me and I do it because I fear the Lord. I'm not doing it for any other reason. People say all kinds of things about me.
God knows the facts. Okay? That's all there is to it. Uh remember this, God keeps the books. God keeps the books. Not humanity, not man, no one else. God keeps the books. And when we fear the Lord, when we fear the Lord, it it actually makes holiness perfect.
In 2 Corinthians chapter 7, are you enjoying this, Jeff? >> Yes, sir. >> How about you, Matt? >> Yes. >> Ah, see, I've got two guys here that in TV that love what what I'm saying. It says, "Having therefore," this is 2 Corinthians 7:1, "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness where in the fear of God."
So the fear of God makes you holy. You live a holy life when you fear the Lord. Ain't that amazing? So it's like it it creates in us a a desire, a longing to be godlike, to be like the Lord, holiness, you know, holy. It says perfecting holiness in the fear of the Lord.
And like I said earlier, the fear of the Lord releases us and delivers us from all other fears, from the natural and the sinful. Remember Isaiah 8, I just shared with you you know earlier Isaiah 8 verse 12-13 on it says don't you know they they say a a conspiracy he he said don't don't fear them let the lord be your fear don't fear the people what what they say let the lord be your fear so when you fear the lord all other fears disappear now listen if the fear of the lord has not taken over your life and the fear of sickness will and the fear of violence will and other fears from this world will.
I repeat, if the fear of the Lord has not taken over your life, the fear of violence and sickness, poverty, death and so on will. Why do people fear death? Fear of the Lord is not there. Why are people afraid to die? They don't fear God. When you fear God, you will not fear death.
When you fear God, you will not fear death. You look forward to it with joy because this is what will release you from this world to be with the Lord. I don't fear death. I I I'm being be honest with you. I don't fear death. I'm looking forward to it that I will be free from this body and be present with my redeemer.
That's my joy. Because the fear of the Lord delivers us from the fear of death and the fear of anything in this world. That's it. Fear God and you will fear none. Fear God and you will fear none. And how do we get it? Quite simple. The knowledge of the Lord brings his fear.
It's amazing that the Bible tells us very clearly that and let's read it together in Isaiah. And there's a lot more there, but I'll just give you a scripture from Isaiah 11 verse 2 and 3. And there's many many many more portions in the Bible. But uh Isaiah 11:2 and 3, "And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, and the spirit of wisdom, understanding, the spirit of counsel and might."
Watch this, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. So the knowledge of God's word brings the fear of the Lord. And we need to pray for the knowledge of the Lord. And that will bring the fear of the Lord. And that's by the way what Paul prayed for in Ephesians 1 17.
He said that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of glory may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. So when you receive the knowledge of the Lord through his word, you receive his fear. And you know what the Bible says?
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of what? Wisdom. Lord, I pray that you'll sew this word today in our hearts. Like David, we pray, teach us to fear your name. Teach us your fear, Lord. And Lord, we thank you for what you've said in your word that we know when we know your fear, we will lack nothing.
We give you praise and glory. And God's people said, "Amen." And amen and amen. Well, thank you again for being with me. I pray the Lord has used this teaching to bless your life. be with me tomorrow because I have a a very powerful teaching on how to have a healthy conscience.
A healthy conscience because today, precious people of God, there is a u sadly there's a problem with uh let me just take this out here just a second here. So for troubles. So we'll talk about that tomorrow and I'll show you scriptures how to be free from a conscience that is not clear. All right, I'll see you tomorrow and thank you for your support.
