The Headlines of Hebrews - A Must Watch!
Transcript
I'm going to have a great time with you today. Absolutely a great time with you. I love ministering the word and I thank God for you that you're there listening. Thank you for being my wonderful family and partner. And I pray the teaching today on the book of Hebrews will so bless you as it blesses me every time I read the book of Hebrews.
You know, I've always said we read thoughts. If you want to read the Bible, don't read chapters. Read thoughts. Uh the whole book is a thought. One thought. And the reason I say that is because I've said so many times how I read the Bible once through every four months.
And I came up with a system where I read thoughts. Meaning like I stop where the thought stops. It you know it doesn't matter how many chapters I read. For example, with Genesis 1 to 11 is one thought. It's the story of man. From 12 to 24 is the story of Abraham.
That's another thought. So that's what I mean by thoughts. So but the whole book of Hebrews is one thought. It has to do with the early church, Hebrew believers at that time who came into the faith. Some of them wanted to go back to Judaism. And that's why the whole book was written.
And we're going to look at some amazing things today. And I pray the Lord will really give you some amazing truth and revelations that will really bless you. So today and tomorrow I'll be dealing with this amazing truth from the book of Hebrews. Wonderful Jesus, I thank you for your word to you.
Be all the glory, all honor, all praise, majesty, and dominion. Lord, open our hearts, open our eyes, spiritual eyes to see your blessed work today in a powerful way in Jesus name. And God's people said, "Amen." Now, the book of Hebrews is one of the deepest books in the New Testament.
And it was written most likely by Paul the Apostle. Of course, no one knows, but most likely by Paul because at the end he talks about Timothy and so on. Um, it was written to early Jewish believers who were going through great persecution for being in the faith, for being believers in Jesus.
Because in that day, in those days under Roman rule and authority, the Jewish people had liberty to worship as they desired in the temple or their synagogues. And under the authority of the high priest and so on and the Sanhedrin, which is like their supreme court, they were they were given protection.
Now if someone was declared an outsider like thrown out of the temple or the synagogue, he would lose the protection of the cover of the authorities within the Jewish leadership and that we could come into a place of difficulty under Rome and be mistreated and so on. So these early Jews uh were dismissed from being Jewish people at at in about 60 AD or so.
So for 60 years they were protected. They could go to the synagogue. They could go to the temple. Total protection. They could have jobs. They can have families and so on. who uh accepted them. But once a a believer in those days was thrown out of the synagogue and not allowed to go into the temple, his family also had to forsake him.
No one would hire him or her. No, nobody could help them. So they lost everything for becoming believers in Jesus. So in 60 AD the Jewish authorities decided that the early believers were no longer Jews. It was a sect and that's why the book was written to help those sweet people who are believers in the Lord to remain in the faith.
And so you you have to have that thought in your in in your mind as you read the book of Hebrews. He's talking to them. So he begins with God who had son times and now was man who spake in time passed by the prophets now spoke to us by his son.
So he immediately begins with how is God speaking today? He's speaking through his son. And then he talks about uh what God through his son is saying to us. And who is the son of God? He's the brightness of his glory. Uh and and the express image of his person.
He upholds all things by the word of his power and so on. And then he talks about how when the Lord purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty. So he begins with with being with with a very powerful declaration of who Jesus is.
He's God Almighty. He is the brightness of God's glory, the express image of God. He upholds all things by the word of his power. yet he's the same one who also died on the cross and sat at God's right hand. And then he begins to uh show us how much better Jesus is beginning with angels.
He's much better than angels because it says being made so much better than angels. And what did God say to him? You are my son. This day have I begotten you. Again I will be to my father. he'll be to me a son. So he's he's building his case with these believers to say here's who Jesus is.
And and then he shows them clearly he is God Almighty in verse eight. But unto the son he says thy throne oh God is forever. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom. So you're leaving God by leaving the faith. He is God Almighty. You can't walk away from him.
You've loved righteousness, hated iniquity. Therefore, God, even your God, hath anointed thee with the all of gladness above your your fellows. And he is talking about and anointing that only Jesus was anointed with. That's why it's called the oil of gladness. The oil of gladness was a was a heavenly anointing that only belonged to the son of God.
Think about this that all high priests and prophets were anointed or the kings of Israel were anointed with an earthly anointing while Jesus was anointed with a heavenly anointing called the oil of gladness above your fellows or companions that no one else could receive that that anointing but you.
So he's he's showing them who Jesus is. And then he he's talking about how God is now speaking to him and saying, "And thou, Lord, in the beginning you've laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain.
They'll wax old as a garment, as a vesture. You'll fold them up. They will be changed. But you are the same. Your years will never fail." He's talking about his son. Imagine that's how he begins by talking to someone who wants to leave the faith. So powerful Jackson is sitting here listening.
And then he says to which of the angels did he ever say that? Did he say ever to an angel sit on my hand on my right hand until I make your your enemies your foottool? So now he presents this powerful revelation of who Jesus is and then says listen here he's talking to these believers.
We ought to give the more earnest he to the things which we've heard less at any time we should let them sleep. And then he says this and it's a warning to them. If the word spoken by angels, meaning the Old Testament, if the word spoken by angels was steadfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that that heard him.
In other words, if you reject the old covenant, if you rejected the old covenant which was given by angels, you will have been judged, how much more we we ought to give a more earnest heed to the things which you've heard, lest at any time we should let them sleep.
If the word spoken by angels was was steadfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward, how shall we escape? If the old covenant saints were punished for leaving and walking away from what Moses said, what God said through Moses, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?
I'm talking to someone now who needs to hear this. There's a lot of people today who want to just walk away from God. Some are walking away from the church. Some are saying, "Well, I'm seeing this and he's seeing that and I don't like it." Listen, the Lord warned very clearly.
Any any man who puts his hand to the plow, looks back, is not fit for the kingdom. How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.
You know it's easy to begin good. The question is will you end good? Will you finish strong? That's what matters. It's not how we begin. It's how we finish that matters with God. And now he begins to talk about the Lord again that he is the one who will be the authority forever because it says for unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come.
So if you disobey the angels in the old covenant, you would have been punished. But the angels are not the ones in authority. Nor did God give them authority for the world to come. In a certain place he testified, saying, "What is man that you are mindful of him or the son of man?
You have visited him and madeest him a little lower than the angels. Thou crownest him with glory and honor that set him over the works of your hands. Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. But we see Jesus aha verse N was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Now this is amazing that he's the one who tasted death. Why? To bring sons. It says in bringing many sons unto glory because it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things. He is the one who died in bringing many sons unto glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
And now he says, listen, you can't walk away because he that sanctified you and you who are sanctified are one. You can't walk away from your Jesus. You're one with him. It wasn't so in the Old Testament. But Jesus said we we are one because here it says both he that sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all of one.
If they left what Moses said, they would have been punished and they were not even one with God. Today we're one with God. How can we live? How can anyone leave if he's one with Jesus? Yeah. Jack sitting like this, you know. And then it says how the Lord will talk about us.
He says, I will declare your name unto my brethren. Behold, I and the children which God hath given me. You can't walk away from the Lord who says we are his. For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself look uh it says himself likewise took part of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil and deliver them who through the fear of death for all their lifetime subject to bondage.
And so it says in all things it behold him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest. And now he's encouraging them that he suffered and is able to rescue those who are suffering because they because they were and that he himself has suffered being tempted. is able to help or suck at them that are tempted.
What a precious redeem or aid them help. And he still the same thought. Chapter three, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the apostle and high priest of our profession. Think about him. who was who who who was faithful to him that appointed him like Moses was faithful.
So now he can he he connects the old and new testament and he says okay but this man is worthy of glory more than Moses. This man was kind of worthy of more glory than Moses in as much as he who has who hath builded the house has more honor than the house.
He's talking to the people who want to go back to Moses and he's saying, "Wait a minute. He is the one who builded the house." And he says, "And he that builds all things is God. Only God can build the house." And Christ as a son over his own house whose house are we.
If we hold fast, if we stay in that faith, it will be his house. If we hold fast the confidence and rejoicing of the hope firm to the end, the whole thought of the whole book right to the end to the last chapter is hold on. Don't give up.
Don't walk away. That's why the great chapter 11 is about the great John of of the faith. He he he every chapter in this book has to do with please don't go back. Please think about what you're doing. Please look at how much better you have it now.
Even though you're under great persecution, even though you've lost so much, you have lost nothing. You've gained way more than you've lost. And so he said, "Today, if you hear his voice, don't harden your heart." And now he gives them a warning. He says, "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God."
The whole book is about don't leave the living God. Don't start questioning his promises. For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end. You can't walk away. Be steadfast to the end. And why is it that Israel lost in the wilderness?
Because of their unbelief. They could not enter because of their unbelief. So we stay in the in the in the faith. And now we're in chapter four already. Let us therefore fear lest the promise being left us of entering into his rest. Any of you should seem to come short of it.
When I read this book, a fire burns in my soul. A fire burns in my soul. God is talking to me about the importance. You know, I was telling my children, Michael and Jessica, a few days ago, I said, I want you from here on to put yourself in the scriptures.
So when Paul is writing to the Corinthians, he's talking to you or the Galatians, he's talking to you. Or when he's talking to the Ephesians, he's talking to you. He's praying for you. to change your life. Because if you read the Bible and you're reading about what he said to them, it's not catching on with you.
But if you put your name in there, he's talking to you. It'll change your life. Ruth Graham said, Billy Graham's wife, that she would put her name in her Bible, that God would be speaking to her if she put Ruth, Ruth, Ruth, Ruth. That's what I heard her say years and years ago.
Ain't it beautiful? So he's saying now, okay, don't leave. Unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them. But the word preached unto them did not there was no faith there and did not help them. But we as long as we walk by faith we are in rest.
He limits a certain day saying in David today after so long a time it is said today if you will hear his voice harden not your heart. So they didn't have really rest because they didn't live by faith. Let's labor therefore to enter into that rest. Let any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
And then he he gives us what gives us faith. And that's the next verse. The word of God is quick and powerful. So he says, if you want to live by faith and find rest, here's the answer. It's the Bible. The word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing a sun of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, is a discerner of the thoughts intents of the heart.
So the Bible is the key to living by faith. And not only that, but he says now we also have a great high priest passed into the heavens, Jesus, the son of God. Let's hold fast our profession. So get his word in you and cling to him. Cleave to him and you'll be at rest.
And you can't cling to the Lord and cleave to the Lord without his word. So how do you find peace and rest? His word which will help you cleave to him. That's it. That's it. And then he says, you know what? We don't have a high priest that can't be touched with the feeling of our infir infirmities.
In all points, he was standing like we are. Okay. So you're you you're in trouble. You're struggling. He knows what it's like because he was tempted in all points yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace. We may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
And then we're going through it right there. Tomorrow I'll continue with chapter 5. You know, I may end up doing three programs with this, not just two. There it is. It is loaded with power. Hebrews is so full of power and it shows us something amazing. Jesus is better than angels.
We just saw that. better than Moses, better than the Old Testament. It's right there. I just I just showed it to you. And before we go into Hebrews 5, he begins to talk about who really is the high priest here. So you people who want to walk away from Christ because of the high priest telling you leave the synagogue.
I'm talking about the early Jews who were being kicked out of the synagogues and temple whom he was writing to right here. He said, "Who's the real high priest here? Is it the man who told you to leave the synagogue or is it the son of God who wants you in what he is?
And that's the next chapter. All right, that's enough for today. Would you please tell your friends I'm teaching on this? It's just so powerful, you know, and tomorrow I don't want to repeat all I said today. Okay. So, I I I I I do hope and pray that you uh will will if you miss anything, just go back and watch it again so you can connect with me tomorrow.
