((music playing)) I love the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews is so deep and so powerful. Oh, it's amazing. It's one of the most powerful books in the in the in the New Testament, written most likely by Paul the Apostle to early Jewish believers. And I began kind of giving you the headlines, the headlines yesterday.
I want to continue today and thank you for joining me. Lord, I thank you for your word. I thank you for your word. To you be the glory. To you be the honor. To you be the praise. Precious and wonderful. Jesus, open our hearts, Lord, to receive your precious word today.
Amen. So I began yesterday by telling you why the book was written. It was written because early Jewish believers wanted to go back into Judaism because of persecution. Because in those days for the first 60 years, by the way, up to 60 AD, I I should say, the the early Jewish believers were looked upon as Jews by the Jewish authorities.
So they could go to the temple and pray. They could go to the synagogue and so on. In about 60 AD or so they were looked upon as a sect. When that happened, they lost the protection granted to them by the Romans and they were persecuted because at that time anyone who was looked upon as a Jewish individual was protected under Roman law and uh they could get jobs and have a have a family, be taken care of and so on and so forth. and the Jewish people had the liberty to uh uh practice their their faith freely.
But if the high priest and the Sanhedrin or the Supreme Court of the Jewish authorities at that time decided that so and so should not be a part of Judaism, they were dismissed from the faith, were looked upon as a sect, therefore could be persecuted and lose everything.
No one would hire them. No one would give them help. Nobody would shelter them, including their own families would be punished if if they even tried to help them. So these early believers were losing everything. And that's why the book of Hebrews was written. And the book of Hebrews has one thought in it.
It's talking to early Jewish believers on staying in the faith. Period. So you see that right through the whole book. And I showed you yesterday how it started with who is Jesus? He's he's God Almighty. So God spoke through the prophets to the fathers, but now he's speaking through his son who is God Almighty.
And then he says, uh, you know, he's better than angels because he didn't say to any of the angels, sit on my right hand. And now he begins to give them scriptures about Jesus being God from the Old Testament. And we went through all that yesterday. And now in chapter two, he says, "Make sure now you understand, you can't walk away without being punished."
Therefore, we ought to give more earnestly to the things which we've heard, lest at any time we shall let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression, and disobedience received the just recompense of reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?
So he's warning them not to walk away from the Lord. We went through all that and now we ca we come to chapter five and there's a lot I shared yesterday. I don't want to have to go back and say it all. It was so loaded. So please make make sure if you missed yesterday to go back and and watch it.
And the Jackson is here sitting like this listening because he really enjoyed yesterday. Now was you enjoyed yesterday. >> Powerful. Well because it's the word. So now he in chapter five he focuses in who is the real high priest here because in those days the high priest was the authority in Jerusalem and the holy land and and these early Jews were told by him and the authorities to leave the synagogue and leave the temple.
But then he says that every high priest taken from among men is ordained for man in things but pertaining to God that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins who can have compassion on the ignorant and on them that are out of the way for that he himself also is compassion with infirmity.
So he's only a man. But he says, "No man takes this honor to himself, but he that is called of God like Aaron." Also Christ glorify not himself to be made high priest. But he said that said to him, "You're my son." Aha. Now he starts talking about something amazing that this high priest is the son of God.
Today have I begotten thee. Thou art to preach forever after the order of Mecher. And now he explains something incredible about the priesthood of the Lord that is eternal and that he was called of God and high priest before the priesthood was ordained and he did not want to get into whom Melkited is and so on.
And he says, "Because you you can't handle it. You you ought to be teachers now, but you have need of help because they were weak. They wanted to walk away. How can you give people meat to want to walk away?" But now in ver in in in chapter six, let's leave the principles of the doctrines of Christ and let's go on to perfection.
Let let's see what will happen if you walk away. At first they say don't walk away. You can't walk away because no no you can't. Jesus is God Almighty. He is the true high priest. He is the Messiah. Okay. Now he said let's let's leave the principles of the doctrines of Christ.
Let's go on onto per perfection. not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith towards God because I just did that. It is impossible for those who are enlightened. Wow. for for those who received light from the Holy Spirit and have tasted the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come.
That is someone who's [snorts] saved already. If they shall fall away to renew them again unto repentance, seeing they crucified to themselves the son of God aresh, put him to an open shame. So he says, let's let's not talk about repentance here. Let's go on talking about something very important for you to understand.
If you walk away, there is no place for repentance again. If they shall fall away, to red to renew them again to repentance is not going to happen. Why? It is impossible. That's something. Now, I'm talking to somebody right here who thinks, well, you know, I I I I should walk away and maybe, you know, before I die, I come back.
Oh, no, you won't. Oh, no, you can't. The door will not be open for you. Walk away from Jesus. The Bible is very clear. It is impossible for those who were once enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift which is salvation who were made partakers of the Holy Ghost.
Have tasted the good word of God, the powers of the world to come. If they shall fall away, fall away is apostasy to renew them again unto repentance. Seeing they crucified to themselves the son of God aresh and put him to an open shame. It's not going to happen.
A preacher in Canada forsook the faith and wrote a book against the resurrection and before he died he he he said how he was wrong. It was too late. Too late. That's what it said. you people can't just walk away and then when they're old and they you know something happens in their heart say oh maybe I was wrong that's why the whole book was written and he explains this he says the earth which drinks in the rain that comes off and on it and and uh brings forth forth herbs and so one who receives blessing from God.
But that which bears thorns and brows is rejected. Rejected whose end is to be burnt. But he encourages he said but we are persuaded better things of you that will accompany salvation though with thus speak. Because they were about to walk away completely. That's why the whole book was written.
God is not unrighteous to for to forget your work and labor of love which you have showed towards his name. But we desire that every one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end. Unto the end. Don't be sloughtful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherited the promises.
And then he begins to talk about Abraham and how God gave him the promise. And then in chapter 7 he talks again about the priesthood of meekc. Now we we come to something very important. He he he he begins to to actually tell them when the priesthood was changed there is made of necessity that that change also must happen with the law.
So you want to go back to the law it's it's already of not effect. Christ is the end of the law. Those priests were made without an oath. But this one with an oath so much by so much was Jesus made assurity of a better covenant. And now this man Jesus because he continuth ever has an everlasting unchangeable priesthood.
Wherefore he's able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever lives to make intercession for them. And this is our high priest who's holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners and made higher than the heavens. Now, ladies and gentlemen, saints of God when we go to chapter 8, he's he's he's stating a powerful case here of how much Jesus is better than angels, than Moses, than the Old Testament, than the high priest, and the priesthood itself. self.
And now he says, "Now the things which we have spoken, this is the son. We have a high priest who's at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in in heaven. We have a minister of the real sanctuary, the real tabernacle." So you want to go back to the shadow to the duplicate while you had the real thing, the real sanctuary, the real high priest.
But now he had obtained a more excellent ministry by how much he also is the mediator of a better covenant which was established upon better promises. He tells them in chapter 1, 2, 3, four, five, and six, you can't leave. Please don't leave. Now he says let's talk about uh the sum.
Who are we talking about here? We are talking about the one who has a more excellent ministry. the mediator of a better covenant established on better promises. And now he says something powerful for finding fault with them. He said, "Behold, the days come when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, with the house of Judah."
And he repeats the words of Jeremiah in that he says a new covenant he hath made the first. The old one is old. Now that which decayth and waxth old is ready to vanish. You cannot go back to what? To what is about to vanish. He's telling them that.
Okay. He says in chapter nine, uh, that first covenant had ordinances of divine services and a worldly sanctuary. That first covenant had a tabernacle that had the candlestick and the table and the showbread and and so forth. The holy place called the sanctuary. And it had the holy of holies with a tabernacle.
Now he talks about the first tabernacle. And why was it there? It was signifying that the way into the holiest was not yet manifest. While the first tabernacle was standing, you and I could not go into God's presence. on only the high priest could which was only a figure.
Now watch what he says. Which stood only in meats and drinks and diverse washings and carnal ordinances. Connal ordinances imposed on them until the time of the reformation. But Christ, hallelujah, being come and high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that's to say, of this building, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered into in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for you and I.
Okay? If the blood of bulls and goats and the and and the ashes of an heer can can clean the unclansed can sprinkling the unclean will sanctify to the to the purifying of the flesh of someone who's not clean. How much more shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal spirit who offered himself through the eternal spirit purge your conscience from dead works to serve the the living God.
And now he explains what the New Testament is all about. It's about receiving the promise of an eternal inheritance. Now, he's the mediator of the New Testament that they who are called might receive the promise of an eternal inheritance. You're not just walking away from an inheritance. You're walking away from an eternal inheritance.
That's what he's saying to them. And I'm talking to someone right now who's thinking about just walking away. You're walking away from an eternal inheritance from Jesus himself. And there's no turning back. You can't come back. When the door is shut, it's shut. It's amazing that Jesus has gone into heaven into the true tabernacle to appear in the presence of God for us.
For us. And look what he says in chapter 10. Now the law had the shadow. Jesus offers his life on the cross and once and for all. He died on the cross. It says, "But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat down on the right hand of God from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his foottool.
And for what? By one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified." How can anyone walk away from that? How could anyone having therefore brethren boldness to enter into the holies by the blood of Jesus by a new and living way which hath consecrated for us through the will that is his flesh having a high priest over the house of God let's draw near with a true heart of in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water let's hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering because he's faithful who promised and let's consider one another to to provoke unto love and good works.
And that's why I'm talking to you today, not forsaking the assembly of ourselves together as as the matter of of some is, but exorting one another so much as we see that approaching. And that's why I'm doing this. That's why I'm teaching on this. But if we sin willfully, here it is again, if we if we walk away after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sin, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment on fiery indignation which will devour the enemies.
He that despised Moses law died without mercy. said, "Of how much sorrow or punishment suppose he shall he be though worthy who had trod and underfoot the son of God and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing and has done despite under the spirit of grace."
Walking away from the faith is a very dangerous thing to do. the wrath of God will come on that person because it says for we know him that has said vengeance belongth unto me I will recompense it's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God he's warning the readers if you walk away you will know his vengeance And then he says, "Now call to remembrance the days when you were saved and walking with God.
Cast not away therefore your confidence, which had a great recompense of reward. So you you have need of patience that after you have done the will of God, you might receive the promise. yet a little while and he that shall come will come will not tear. How do we live?
The just will live by faith. And if any man draw back, my soul will have no pleasure in him. We are not of them who draw back under predition or destruction, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. And now he gives them an incredible chapter 11.
Here's what the giants of the faith went THROUGH AND HOW THEY stayed in the faith. Now wherefore chapter 12 will compass with so great a cloud of witnesses. Lay aside every weight, every sin that so easily besets you. Run the race with patience, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith.
For the joy that was set before him endureth the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. So rather than considering all the troubles you're going through, consider him that endured such contradictions of sinners against themselves, lest you be weird and faint in your mind.
So lift up those hands that hang down and your feeble knees. Make straight path for your feet. Lest that which is lame be turned out of the way. But now it's time for you to be healed. It's time now to live for the Lord. For ye have come unto Mount Zion, city of the living God, heavenly Jerusalem, general assembly of the firstborn, the church of the firstborn, and to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and don't refuse him that speaks.
For if they escape not who refuse him that speak on earth, how much more it says, shall not we escape if we turn away from him that speaks from from heaven. Wow. And he he he comes to a conclusion by saying, "Wherefore we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved.
Let's have grace whereby we must serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Our God is a consuming fire. And then chapter 13, he ends with don't forget to love each each other. Don't forget to entertain strangers. Some have entertained angels un uh unaware. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, forever.
All right. Now, let's offer the sacrifice of praise. Let's live the life and the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus the great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you perfect in every good work to do his will working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ to be glory forever and ever.
