our overflow series online open your Bibles to Matthew 25 we can't see you but God see you open the app Matthew 25:14 this is going to be a longer read this morning so just pay attention to the story for it is just like a man about to go on a journey who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them to one he gave five talents to another two talents and to another one each according to his ability and he went on his journey immediately the one who had received five talents went and traded with them and gained five more talents in the same manner the one who had received two talents gained two more but he who received one Talent went away and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money now after a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them and the one who received five talents came up and brought five more talents saying Master you entrusted me with five talents you entrusted five talents to me see I have gained five more his master said to him well done my good and faithful slave you were Faithful over few things I will put you in charge of many things enter into the joy of your master also the one who had received two talents came up and said Master you entrusted me with two talents see I have gained two more talents his master said to him well done my good and faithful slave you were faithful with few things I will put you in charge of many things enter into the M the joy of your master and the one also who had received the one Talent came up and said master I knew you were to be a hard man reaping where you did not sew and Gathering where you scatter no seed and I was afraid and went away and hid your talent in the ground see you have what is yours but his master answered and said to him you Wicked and lazy slave you knew that I reap where I do not seow gather where I scattered no seed then you ought to have put my money in the bank and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest therefore take away the talent from him and give it to the one who has 10 for to everyone who has more shall be given and he will have an abundance but from the one who does not have even what he does have shall be taken away throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness in that place where there is weeping and nashing of teeth today I want to talk to you from the title a waste of talent you may be seated y'all said now you know it's hard to watch someone who has talent waste it you'll even say to yourself if I just had a little bit of that person's Talent all the things that I would do with it because it is a new nuance and it is ignoring and irritant frustrating to watch someone who has been given god-given Talent throw it away if it is hard for you to watch someone waste Talent how much harder do you think it is for God who gives it to watch the people that he's given it to not utilize it protect it expand it and multiply it today we're going to talk about then overflow in the Kingdom you say why would I talk about this Parable in a series called overflow because you need to know in the Kingdom there are rewards for his faithful people there is an abundance for those who are faithful in this life there is an overflow for you not just to go to church but do a lot more than that that that God has stored up for you an overflow of abundance for those who are in the Kingdom but you can't get what he has and not work for it he he's not going to give it to a slave who wants the benefit but is not willing to get to work and he's calling us to do more than be here he's saying I have given you talents and I'm calling you to protect and expand the talents that you have been given he starts in verse 14 and he says for it is like a man who's about to go on a journey who entrusted his slaves with his possessions now when he says for it he's talking talking about the kingdom the word it there has to do with the kingdom of God Matthew 18:3 talks about if you are not converted and become like a child you cannot enter the kingdom of God and Matthew 6:10 talks about on earth like it is in heaven yet let your will be done your Kingdom Come On Earth as it is in heaven in other words the kingdom represents both Heaven and Earth where Christ rules and he's saying that is the totality of my kingdom it's down here it's up there it's everywhere and he is the king of his kingdom and from Matthew 24-2 he's giving his disciples explanations of the kingdom and how the kingdom itself works you'll notice before the parable of the talents there is the parable of the virgins and that Parable in short is basically about being prepared while you wait there were five who were unprepared and five who were prepared and so it's about being prepared cuz you never know when he's coming and so you need to be prepared while you're waiting and then he transitions into the parable of the talents which is not about being prepared while you wait it's about being productive in your work the kingdom wants your preparedness and it wants your productivity and he says for it is like that kingdom is like a man who is about to go on a journey that man is Jesus Christ who's giving the parable why because he's letting them know guys I'm about to be up out of here I'm about to go on a Journey or a trip which kind of insinuates that I will be coming back but I I'm about to go on a journey and he's alluding to acts 1 n after he was raised from the dead there was an Ascension that took place as the disciples watched him be lifted up on a cloud to be seated at the right hand of the father so he was foreshadowing in this story what the kingdom is like and he says I'm about to go on a journey and when I do I need you to know that I'm entrusting my slaves with my possessions understand and I want you to hear this he the master is possessive of the slaves these are my slaves and it is my possessions I need you to hear that because I'm going to come back to that later He Is possessing the slaves understand me if you are in Christ you are a slave okay if you're a Christian you're a slave this is how Redemption Works Redemption means to buy back we were gods in the garden and then sin came in and Satan began to rule Ephesians 1:7 says through the blood of Jesus Christ you were redeemed in other words bought back from the other slave master Romans 66 says you are no longer slaves of sin which means sin is that a slave master if you're a slave of it but what Jesus did on the cross is he paid the price that you yourself couldn't afford he's the only one who could afford it and he bought you back from a slave master called sin so that you can be free to be a slave of Christ if he's the one who had the ability to pay that means he owns the last time I checked whoever pays owns 1 Corinthians 6:19 says you were bought with a price and it was a hefty price because it came from his blood and he redeemed you from one slave master over to another slave master himself this is why the New Testament writers would always say Paul said in Titus 1:1 Philippians 1:1 Romans 1:1 I Paul a bonder servant of Jesus Christ Bond servant means slave Peter says in 2 Peter 1:1 I Peter a bond servant of Jesus Christ Jude 1:1 Jude Jude a bonder servant of Jesus Christ John re Revelations 1:1 a bonder servant of Jesus Christ they were careful before they even started writing the book to let you know I'm a slave I have been redeemed and bought not because I had the funds in my account I'm insufficient funds but that Jesus through his blood bought me from one master and brought me to another Master they understood something that we at ocbf need to understand we need to understand that you are not the boss you are not the CEO you've been traded to a new team you're Under New Management you're not the owner that's right you are under a new regime regulation and rules okay you say Pastor Jay I get it let me make sure this means you can't post what you want to post this means you can't talk however you want to talk it means you can't go wherever you want to go it means you can't do whatever you want to do in hookup culture you can't have sex with whoever you want to have sex with you can't treat people however you want to treat them and you sure enough can't use your talents however you want to use them yeah you are a slave which means you're under ownership and you ain't the owner in American culture we the owners no you're not you ain't got no money you didn't buy anything Christ redeemed you he is the master and the New Testament writers were even careful to say I'm a slave before I give you all this good stuff that Jesus told me to give you like I don't think too highly of myself than I ought to think the Bible is clear about that and I think we think a little bit too high of ourselves making our own decisions and can't nobody tell me nothing and all this stuff we hear in our music they're pulling you right into a satanic mentality that got him thrown out of Heaven you you are a slave of Christ he he he he Is possessing the slaves he possesses you but not only that he says it's my slaves and my stuff he said I'm not just possessing you I'm possessing all that stuff that you think is yours the last time I checked in Psalm 24:1 it says the Earth is the Lord's and the fullness there it means everything in it Hagi 28 talks about the money and says he says the silver and gold it belongs to me I love Psalm 50: 10-12 which says the animals in the forest are mine the cattle on the hills are mine the birds on the mountain are mine the insect in the field is my it all belongs to me you say Pastor Jay I get it let me make ((applause)) sure this means your money ain't yours it means your house ain't yours it means your cars ain't yours it it means your career is not yours it means your social media page ain't yours it means your spouse ain't yours it means your kids ain't yours it means your your business ain't yours your battles aren't even yours it all belongs to him and one of the major M mistakes we make in the Christian Life is thinking we own stuff he's letting you know this is what the kingdom is like the kingdom is like a man who's about to go on a journey and he's he's he's gone away and he's entrusted his slaves with his stuff so let me tell you how he divied it up in verse 15 this is what the kingdom is like in verse 15 he says to one slave he gave five talents to another slave he gave two talents and to another slave he gave one Talent each according to their ability he so in other words he divies up the responsibility everybody doesn't get the same okay but let me explain what a talent is a talent in the Greek has to do with um money that was silver or gold bars that were very heavy almost 50 PBS they could weigh in other words he was giving each slave for his kingdom a valuable weighty responsibility for them to carry out in their life if you are or under the sound of my voice either here or online God has given you a very valuable weighty responsibility for you to carry out for his kingdom through your life as his vessel if you're under the sound of my voice everybody in this room whether you think you nothing whether you got low self-esteem what your daddy and mama did to you what people told you what you thought happened to you God gave you a very valuable weighty responsibility to carry out in this life in other words he wants to use you that's why you're here you are not nothing or whatever those people told you in your past that has you walking with your head down the king of the Kingdom has given you a very valuable weighty responsibility for you to carry in this life so I need somebody to hear that and understand that but he gave it to you according to to your ability in other words this King knows you better than you know you he knows your history he knows where you at he knows your temperament he knows if you get mad fast or slow he knows everything about you and he knew what to give you a lot of us are asking for weights that we can't even carry and you like why God ain't answering my prayer he is answering your prayer he said no you know those conversations you get with people and they think you're not listening just because you don't agree you're like no you didn't hear me I did hear you I don't want to do it you know God can say no but you got to understand if God said yes to everything you asked for your whole life would look like he said no to everything you asked for you would have went to the wrong places you would have been in the wrong City you would have started the wrong business you would have married the wrong person you know how many bullets you've dodged by God telling you no that means because he's a careful King who knows his slaves and gave each according to their ability we need to be faithful enough and trusting enough to praise God when he says no because he knows his children he knows what they can handle he knows if it's too much this King in this Kingdom he's given each one a responsibility to carry based on your ability this also means if you have a responsibility you're looking at and God has given it to you and you think it's too much for you that's also not true oh y'all didn't many of you are looking at things and you're say I can't do it I can't do it but but you can't shake it it stays in front of you he gave that smart King who loves you too much to give you too much is the same smart King who's given you something you don't think you can carry so the question is I trust the Lord and he and he my wife like you don't know the words to know songs on both ends of that we have to trust him because the king in his kingdom he knows and he gave each one according to their ability and then what what what did they do what did they do stick with me verse 16 what does it says it says immediately somebody say immediately immediately the one who had received five talents went and traded them and gained five more watch verse 17 in the same manner the one who had received two talents gained two two more okay let me just pause and say slave number two is my guy in this story I am a big fan of slave number two why we could assume that slave number one got so much he was energized by what he got and went but slave number two seeing himself get less still in the same manner immediately went out why is he my guy cuz he did not do what many of us do get stuck in unproductivity because we're stuck in ((applause)) comparison he didn't waste time comparing his platform to somebody else's platform his ministry to somebody else's Ministry his page to somebody else's page his like to somebody else's like his face to somebody else's face his spouse to somebody else's spouse his business to somebody else's business his income to somebody else's income and many of us are stuck in unproductivity because we're scrolling comparing ourselves to everybody else comparing yourselves to weights that you don't you weren't even meant to carry and and this was me I've told you a thousand times I'm reading this and I'm like I wish I was like the second slave because all I saw my whole life is my dad's five talents and I was like I got like one and a half ((applause)) and my mom was the one who encouraged me you better take that one and a half and two and do what God has called you to do because because you're here once and the clock never stops ticking you don't have time to be looking at everybody else's stuff you don't have time to be comparing yourself to everybody else what they got you don't even know if they got joy with what they got you over there you over there depressed and they depressed some of us need to stop scrolling and start strolling and what God has called you to ((applause)) do um that's what the first two did Verse 18 says but but is a contrast conjunction that means what I'm about to say is nothing like what I just said that means there's another slave that did something different in verse 18 it says but he who received one Talent went away and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money there's always got to be one don't it when I was reading this I was like oh come on on nephew you got that cousin there I mean come on man you didn't see us what we was doing and it's interesting to me that he had enough energy to bury it into the Earth but he didn't have enough energy to dig in for the kingdom it's not that you we don't have energy it's just misplaced we have the energy to bury ourselves into the spreading of gossip but we don't have the energy to bury ourselves into the spreading of the Gospel you got the energy to bury yourselves in wickedness of the culture but you ain't got no energy to bury yourself in the worship of Christ I I mean you do it you just misplace it and here is a slave that is a contrast to what God is trying to work out for his kingdom pleasure and he buries the talent his master's money and he puts it in to the ground I'm going to come back to this slave in a moment um that's what the three slaves did y'all still with the story two of them worked with what they had um they were content and grateful and went one of them buried it into the ground and left it like that you remember the part where he says the kingdom is like a man who's about to go on a journey remember that part and then he entrusted his slaves with his possessions remember that part and then two of them did what they were supposed to do remember that and then one of them didn't okay verse 19 now after a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts okay you get to choose what you going to do but Jesus is the master in the story and he went away for a long time meaning you don't know when he going to come back but he he is very specific of what he's going to do when he comes back when he comes back Brian L Rich touched on this last week I thought it was great when he comes back um you're going to have to deal with him people be living like there is a cultural Church culture fear of God issue that we have in the church we'll say silly stuff like Only God can judge me oh yeah he will you would actually rather that person do it cuz it ain't going to be nothing like the Judgment seat of Christ Paul says I want you to understand this here Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:10 he says for we all and he's it's a Corinthians so he's talking to Christians and he then includes himself he says for we all will go before the Judgment seat of Christ and be recompensed for what we did for the kingdom or what we buried in in Le of the Kingdom he's saying he's coming and he's coming to settle accounts okay let me make sure we um make sure we understand this so that you're not just in church and then you just leave and then don't think um when Jesus comes there's going to be what's called a beima seat or a judgment seat which Christians will then be judged you thought Oh I thought I avoided that I'm a Christian well you avoided the white Throne judgment you didn't avoid the Judgment seat of Christ okay and and what he's going to do is he's going to take his seat on the beima seat and then it's going to be your turn or my turn or whoever's turn it is and this is what it's going to look like come here this is slave number one now I need you to understand this in verse 20 slave number one gets recompensed first and what he says is Master you gave me five talents see that I went and got five more so he was productive with his life for the kingdom not for my personal bank roll my name how many followers I got he don't care nothing about that he was productive for the kingdom and and he produced a bigger weight than what he even got and a greater value and what the king says the master says in verse 21 is what we all want to hear well done my good and faithful slave you were Faithful over few things this is nothing in comparison to the Overflow in the Kingdom now I'm going to make you ruler over much more enter the joy of your master okay stick with me this is my guy slave number two remember I mean this is my guy slave number two gets judgment as well and recompensed as well and I'm going to show you how it went oh you had two is what the word says and and the slave said see that I have doubled it I have brought four and then you know what it says in verse 23 well done my good and faithful slave you were Faithful over few things now I'm going to make you ruler over me much more many things please enter the joy of your master amen okay did you just hear that yeah no you didn't I don't think you did do they have the same amount no praise God but in verse 21 and verse 23 he said the exact same thing at the Judgment seat this is where we get confused we think our overflow is going to be based on what we were given no it's going to be based on what you did with what you were given they did not produce the same profit but they produce the same percentage of prophet in the same way in the Christian Life you may not produce the same profit as somebody else but you can still produce the same percentage of faithfulness and that faithfulness will be rewarded in the same way with an overflow in the kingdom of God okay me and my wife were in why I went here last week me and my wife were in uh Tampa uh we like going to Tampa and um there's one of our favorite restaurants out there like we fly out there we going to eat this anyways um it's a good restaurant so we were on the way to the restaurant in an Uber okay we just left the hotel got in Uber went to the restaurant and it was a it was a white man I'm going tell you why I'm explaining this race it was a white man and uh he was we we got in and we looked at each other and we fist bumped because he was listening to gospel music I was like this is my guy right here and he was listening to gospel music and he was listening like this I said ((music playing)) sir I said sir me and Ken was in the back like there I said man hey you get I said sir I like your music he said man I love some gospel music I said you're my guy I reached over the car and gave him a handshake cuz he was strolling with us um and we said we like your music and we pulled up to the to the to the restaurant and he said uh I appreciate it and you know I play this music as my favorite music but I also just warm people up because the reason why I drive Uber is because I get so many people in my car I get to pray for so many people he said so I just wanted to know if I can pray for y'all I said L the K she I said absolutely and you just made this week's sermon and you don't even know it because he's taking what he has and you think just because somebody got a bigger following or somebody's on a stage that the Master's not going to recompense him the same way he going to recompense them I need you to understand something these two slaves did something we need to do they finished it's not about how you start ladies and gentlemen finish my coach used to say run through the line finish the race and you don't even know when that finish is coming so you better start finish Paul said it this way in second Timothy 47 and8 I fought a good fight yeah I finished the race I kept the faith there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the righteous judge will give me but not only me but to all of those who loved his appearing that's these slaves Hallelujah but your ((applause)) turn why you walking all sheepish shaking your head ((applause)) this is a bad moment when you get there and you already know yeah um he came to the throne the judgment seat with excuses verse 24 I knew you were a hard man that reaped where you did not sell and gather where you scattered no seed and I was afraid I was a hard man not a gracious man okay I reap where I do not seow and Scatter where I gather no seed you know what he just said I didn't really see the benefit for working for you if you going to get all the benefit and this is why some of us don't work for God what benefit is there for me why would I do that or we'll say verse 25 I was afraid so fear is the master that determines our function not the master and if you're afraid like I was to do what I was called to do I started thinking in terms of the talent God gave me and what he was asking me to do in correlation to this moment and I was like I think I'd be more afraid there so if you have a little heart flutter now it will not be compared to your heart flutter then God is calling you to carry a weight and he's calling you to carry it in spite of your fear he's calling you to carry it for him not for you because this is this is this is Americanized satanic mindset what's in it for me what's in it for you is you get to be faithful and you get a well done my good and faithful servant but don't get it twisted it's not your kingdom I'm the king okay um that was the excuse that he made and you ain't as young as them so I'm going to let you stand up cuz I know your knees hurt anytime you got a pushup on that one knee ((music playing)) Jesus said as he's giving this Parable after he made his excuses he said you Wicked and lazy slave verse 26 and 27 you Wicked and lazy slave if I was someone who reaps where I do not seow and gathers where I scattered no seed at least you should have put my money in the bank because there would have accured interest upon my return gotcha oh you don't see what he did there gotcha he came with them excuses and the master hit him in the throat oh if you thought that I was going to gather where I scatter no seed and do all that kind of stuff you could have at least put my money in the bank got you you say what did you do okay okay this slave buried it in the ground because if he puts it in the bank this is why he called him out on the bank if he puts it in the bank the bank will hold it as the Master's money so that if the master does not return he can retrieve it if he put it in the bank and the master does not return he can't go get it because it's not his money so this slave was wicked CU he was playing the end against the middle if the master returns and this whole thing is true then at least I can give him what he gave me but if this whole thing is not true and this uh Jesus returning stuff is not really a thing that at least I can say I lived my life my way his whole goal was to keep it for himself and play the end against the Middle with the kingdom and many of us are doing the same you're in Church you made know Christ and all those things but this whole return of Jesus ruling on the earth stuff and all of that kind of stuff there n we'll see but until then I'm going to be my master until then I'm going to retrieve for myself what God has given me until then it's going to be about the human Trinity me myself and I and if he comes I'll say well at least I can give you back the minimum that you Gave Me You Wicked and lazy slave you're trying to play the end against the middle you like that lukewarm life and you think I ain't going to call you out on it so he's letting us cuz many of us won't even even give our service to the church where it can get a little interest there's accountability there we don't want any accountability we want to do what we want to do and at least he'll let me in have you ever heard somebody say I just want to get in I need you to know that the king is not a fool and he will sit on his throne as he rules and he will judge so what he says from the Judgment seat to this slave is a Messianic Kingdom principle give the one talent that you have to the one who has 10 because the one who has more will be given the one who does not have even what he does have in the Kingdom will be stripped away okay here it is here's the one now take this worthless slave with the others into the out of Darkness where there is weeping and nashing of teeth go to this ((applause)) side okay now I'm going to give you my view on this passage and this last slave okay I've studied many scholars one of them I grew up with I've studied opposing views but this is my view and I'm going to tell you why all three slaves are saved why number one throughout the passage the master claims ownership of all three if the possessions are his then the slaves are his in fullness he's the master these are my slaves verse 14 and verse 19 he claims them throughout the passage number two this judgment was only based on the premise of works not based on the premise of faith it did what did you do with your life that was the Judgment Galatians 21:16 says by works of the law no flesh will be justified that you've been saved by grace through faith that not of yourself it is a gift from God so that no man can boast so if you think that this slave went to hell and those slaves were in heaven you would have to then conclude that they went to heaven on the basis of their works and he went to hell on the basis of his works because the Judgment was only based on Works number three my favorite point if he's a sinner and they are Saints then why in the world are they at the same judgment the Judgment seat of Christ and the white Throne judgment don't happen at the same time so if he's at the same judgment then he must be in Christ and simultaneously recompensed by being unfaithful what does that mean for us there would be no need for a judgment seat if everybody was faithful this means that as a Christian as a Believer there can be in the Kingdom Revelations 20:6 we will rule with him for a thousand years as what it says this was about the millennial Kingdom there will be in the Kingdom Believers weeping and nashing of teeth who are there with profound regret about their judgment of the life they live that they can't return to to redo the outer darkness which is talked about in Matthew 22 with the the slave who came to the wedding Feast the person who came to the wedding feast and got kicked out there's going to be several people out out there who are nonparticipants in the Kingdom watching other people rule because they were Unfaithful in there is an overflow in the Kingdom but Christ is not a fool he's not just giving it away if I took Camden to uh Camden loves to ride all the rides in every Park okay his brain needs to move so he just getting on every ride if I took Camden to a amusement park but he had a bad week and I said your siblings can ride but you can't that would mess up his soul can you imagine being in the kingdom and God gives power privilege pleasure praise and you see all these people getting it and he sends you out to watch it happen the Weeping and nashing of teeth has to be profound regret in his word I don't want us to be in church for 20 and 30 years and to live in regret for a thousand the Overflow is yours is ours the abundance is yours and our and he is faithful to do it based on 1 Corinthians 3:8 the man's labor so I'm going to close with this I'm going to tell you what my Uncle Bo told me my Uncle Bo is Tony Evans is he was Tony is my dad's brother and I was sitting at his house in Fort Lauderdale and I was about 15 years old and he was telling me you know about money and all those different things cuz he knew how to do that and um he gave me this Uncle Bo proverb that I want to give you he said Jonathan he said' I promise you son you want to live like nobody lives now so that you can live like nobody lives later I want to leave you with that overflowing proverb for your life and for your future in the kingdom of God live like nobody out there lives now but you'll get to live like nobody out there gets to live later in overflow in the Kingdom
