playing)) everybody's asking me all day you nervous i mean no i'm excited you nervous no i'm excited it's been torture waiting all day just to get to this moment amen pastor greg's out of town and he asked me to come up here and bring the lesson and i'm real excited about that that's uh means a lot to me that he trusts me with his pulpit i want to start by saying i have a routine every night every night before i go to bed i have to take my dog out go to the bathroom we're just gonna keep it real tonight but my routine is i love looking up into the sky at all the thousands of stars looking back at me and in that moment i think man this is god's creation and all those thousands of stars their light is coming from light years away and god feels really really big in that moment and i feel really small and i like that keeps things in perspective i'm standing in this pulpit tonight pastor greg is a really big personality i'm preaching at a place called global vision bible church it's a global church there's a lot of people here there's a lot of people watching online and i'm feeling really really small tonight and i like it may i always feel small in the house of god may i never get puffed up arrogant or anything i want to stay humble i want to keep it in perspective and i feel really small tonight which is good because when i'm weak he is strong as i decrease he increases amen let's open in prayer father god i just love you i'm living proof that your pile of grace is way bigger than my pile of sin and my pile of mess-ups i thank you lord for how much you love me i thank you lord for how much you believe in me you're my daddy in heaven and i'm your son so lord ((music playing)) i want you to be glorified this is your moment not mine just use me as a humble servant and as a vessel i pray right now in jesus name that you fill this tent up with your holy spirit to overflowing in jesus mighty name i pray that you rush through this tent like a mighty wind father god i don't ask you to show up i ask you to show off tonight because we're going to get in your mighty word and your word is awesome we're going to break it down and i just want you to get the glory so lord father god may i just disappear up here and you up here in a supernatural way lord speak through me may your anointing fall and once again it's all for your glory in jesus name amen go talk about storms tonight i'm going to talk about storms tonight when i was five years old i went to a birthday party with my cousins aunts and uncles and my cousins were all older than me i was i was the baby i was five they were all like 10 12. and one the cousin's birthday his birthday present was a go-kart it wasn't just any go-kart it was one of those go-karts that had been uh hyped up it was tweaked up man very fast they intended on racing it boy i wanted to ride that thing but i was five years old way too little and my dad said son don't you go nowhere near that go-kart yes dad well they ran out of ice they asked my dad to go to the store and so i had an uncle that was a he was kind of overseeing the go-kart and he'd been hitting the drinky drink that's that's my family he goes man your dad's gone you should hop on that thing real quick and spin it around the double-wide trailer before he comes back i said sounds like a plan to me so i jumped on that thing stepped on a pedal before i knew it i was going about 50 60 miles an hour straight into a pine tree because once it took off i didn't realize the power that it had i'm just five years old so i froze hit the pine tree my face went into the steering wheel busted my jaw knocked all my bottom teeth out they had to surgically replant all my teeth into my bottom jawbone that was a storm i was hurt i was freaked out my parents are freaked out imagine my dad coming back from getting ice and there's an ambulance there that was a crazy storm in second grade i had a teacher i had a crush on her she was pretty i'm telling you every test i had on the back i'd write i love you do you love me check yes or no i was shameless right i know shameless she was so sweet she'd always check yes i love you too so i had the biggest crush on i'd go home tell mom i remember valentine's day i brought her valentine's card in a flower i know this miss johnson would come up to class with bruises all the time and i said what happened she goes oh i slipped and fell oh i tripped i'm thinking man you clumsy because you always got bruises one day ms johnson didn't show up to class we had a new teacher miss johnson faced a storm called abuse and her husband had beat her so bad she no longer could teach or was willing to that was a crazy storm i remember in high school there's a kid in my class he had apparently told somebody he had some marijuana on him and that person went and told a teacher and that teacher went told the principal the principal called the cops because he didn't want drugs in his school they came and arrested him his dad was out of town and coming back the next day so they released him to his mom he went home that night and shot himself in the head and killed himself because he was so afraid of what his dad was going to do to him when he came back the next day that was a big storm i remember that i remember the next couple days in class there was an empty desk and the teacher was calling rolling she accidentally called his name out of habit and she broke down and had to leave that's a storm we had an emotional storm we were trying to deal with all that trying to make sense of it as kids she was trying to make sense of it as a teacher i had a childhood friend that called me last year or she called me she texted me say hey i have cancer i'm reaching out to you hoping you'll pray for me because i'm scared and freaked out so i prayed for her all the time a couple months ago she lost her battle to cancer it was rough her husband was in a storm her family's in a storm all of us that knew her we're in a storm i counsel people all the time say hey my spouse just left me or my marriage is a wreck they're in a storm this saturday i'm doing a funeral for eight-year-old little girl who was hit by a car and killed that's a big storm that's a big storm storms are inevitable that's where i'm going with all this nobody's immune to storms you're either coming out of a storm you're in a storm or you have one headed right towards you there are all kinds of storms there's physical storms mental storms there's spiritual storms there's emotional storms i could go on and on you get the picture but scripture is full of life storms as well in genesis we read about noah he endures the greatest storm of all time a storm so big it kills everybody on the face of the planet in the book of daniel there's multiple storms daniel's thrown into a pit with lions we also read about uh shadrach meshach and abednego being thrown into a fiery furnace that's a crazy storm we also read in scripture about a guy named david his storm shows up as an arrogant giant that's a crazy day most of us are familiar with the story of job he went through multiple storms on multiple levels in exodus we read about moses and the israelites they reached the bank of the red sea with the pharaoh's army in hot pursuit behind him during a storm of fear and anxiety they're worried they're gonna die what's the common denominator in all these storms though god never makes the storm disappear but he provides a way through the storm and if we let him he will always be in the storm with us see moses he came to the banks of the red sea god didn't remove the sea he just parted a way through it including the dry ground so they could get across daniel was throwing in the the lion's den did he remove the lions no he sent angels to hold their mouths shut shadrach meshach and abednego did he remove the fiery furnace no they still had to get thrown into the fiery furnace but there was a fourth man in the fire he was in the storm with them i want to do a quick crowd survey how many people here about to raise their hands have seen god do something amazing in your life that's a lot of hands hallelujah how many people in here either yourself or you know somebody who needed a job and and you saw god open a door for him he was like man praise god how many people here has had a a financial challenge too much month at the end of your money and you're like man i can't make it but then god shows up and provided for you how many people witnessed that amen how many of you had a sick loved one or it could have been even you and you prayed and you saw god show up take that fever away and heal him amen how many people are seeing a miracle like an all-out miracle and you know that you know that you know that god showed up in a major way and you give him praise and glory tonight right good i just absolutely set you all up i'm going to use your own words against you at the end of this lesson so just remember this part but you know what no matter how bad things get we serve a good god god is a good god he will never leave us or forsake us amen i can't do i'm going to tonight tonight we're going to talk about my favorite storm in the bible if you have a bibles with you turn to matthew 14. this is a popular story it's about peter getting out of the boat walking on water but you're going to hear me teach teach it in a unique way probably in a way you've never heard before and that's a good thing how many people are just tired of the same old stale stories over and over and over and over like all right i've heard this one over and over not tonight i got a little teaser for you i have recently written a book called cracks in the water and it is in the editing process and i am super excited about it it's anointing it's called cracks in the water preparing for the storms of life and this story i'm talking about tonight is one part of that book nicole's supposed to put up a picture for me when i talk about that teaser nicole you awake back there anyway but peter's the hero in the story not the zero see i've heard too many preachers uh pick on crack on peter for his lack of faith we know the story he gets out of the boat walks on water and takes his eyes off jesus and he sings and everybody's like ah don't be like peter he lacks faith that's wrong peter's the hero not the zero he's like well what do you mean by that well i'm glad you asked so let me set this up this has been a big day for jesus jesus has been out teaching preaching healing even feeding the multitudes in fact he just performed a miracle he just fed the multitudes of five loaves of bread and two fish it's been a big big day which leads us up to where we're going to start in scripture in matthew 14 22. so let's just dig in this story i'm going to do an expository teachings there's going to be a lot of stopping and explaining and there's going to be some stories okay verse 22 immediately jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side while he sent the multitudes away okay jesus knows the importance of turning off the noise he's had a big day a long day all right not to compare myself to jesus but let me tell you ministry is tough ministry is 24 7. seriously i'm on the phone counseling people in the middle of that i'm trying to put a message together for iron men or i'm helping suzanne with putting together a marriage matters study have meetings it just gets crazy it's all the time 24 7 24 7. and then we're doing the deliverances now you get worn out so i can't imagine how wore out jesus is by the end of this day right he's got to be wore out he knows the importance of turning off the noise so i'm going to have some points tonight point number one turn off the noise if you're taking notes see life can get noisy we live in a chaotic society we have deadlines at work we have kids that have baseball practice they have dance class there's financial stress there's dramas with relatives especially if you go to this church [laughter] everybody's not in their heads for sure our culture thrives on busyness and distractions social media has created an anti-social world we have cell phones that demand our attention all the time we have tvs with a gazillion channels on them we have netflix and hulu i mean just it just goes on and on and on it's absolute madness and you know what satan loves that satan loves that he loves when we're busy he loves when we're distracted because guess what when we're doing that we don't have time for god you need to turn off the noise in psalm 46 10 it says be still and know that i am god be honest with yourself when's the last time you were seriously still i'm not talking about when you go to bed when are you still and hanging out with god i bet most of us including me it's hard to check that one off we get so busy even doing god's work right be still and know that i am god that's turning off the noise moving on to verse 23 and when he had sent the multitudes away he went up on the mountain by himself to pray now when the evening came he was alone there okay says he went up to the mountain by himself he was alone there if you underline in your bible a circle you might want to circle those two points because it's crucial he's turning off the noise see it's imperative to get alone with god jesus even sent his disciples away he said here get this boat you guys go on i need some alone time our friends can be a distraction especially my friends i love my friends but man we get together we're either eating or talking and talking and eating this is what we do but you know what that's a distraction too that's not quiet time that's still noise do you have a sgs you're like what i call it my secluded god spot jesus had his in the mountain mine is anywhere around water in the mountains i love a stream brook a river the ocean anything with water oh that's that's my secluded god spot i hang out with god in those places my wife's place is the shower she gets the the the best epiphanies and aha moments in discernment when she's in the shower i laughed about it one time but it made a lot of sense because god's like you know what there's no distraction in that shower she can't hear that phone ding she can't hear the phone ring she's away from the television away from the radio only thing in there is this water no distractions guess what when we get quiet god gets loud when we get quiet god gets loud pastor greg has his tree always talks about his tree that's his secluded god spot he's going out there when he's troubled when he needs a word he comes back filled up he shared so many stories with me testimonies that's awesome that's a secluded god spot let me encourage you to get one of those that's very crucial especially when storms roll in you're going to want that secluded god spot communication with the lord is critical relationship with the lord is crucial i tell us to the guys so guys you've probably heard this if you come to iron man but i'll share it with everybody in here communication is a two-way street that means you talk and you listen you talk and then you listen it's kind of like a ping-pong match you call guys you come home from work and your wife says how was work and you just walk on by and don't say nothing first of all that's not communication second of all you might be in some trouble she wants to know about your day communication is critical it's the same way with our relationship with the lord i have too many people come up to me and go pastor jenny i i'm just i'm not doing good like why it's why i'm praying and praying and praying and man i'm just not getting anything first thing i always ask them oh how much are you listening they always get this funny look on their face it's funny because god gave us one mouth and two ears we should always listen twice as much as we talk so you know what you pray and then you sit be still know that i'm god and listen what if what if you're about to get an answer from god you make you pray you tell them what you need or what your your uh concerns are or your burdens and he's about to tell you and you get up and you go get busy and he's up there going ah he left jesus went up the mountain he went to be alone he talked to his father he talked back it's important to have that relationship and that communication with lord that's a little bit of a bunny trail but i love to say you know when i read my bible i don't just read it i study it which means slow down and when you do man god starts talking to you through scripture and through the holy spirit so this is one of those situations i said lord i always have questions for the lord that god's lots of questions lord what why why did jesus go to the mountain why didn't he go like out to the to the sea to the ocean or like next to a river or in a cave or in a flowery meadow something beautiful why'd he go to the mountain and the lord answered me he said he went to the mountain because he was doing spiritual warfare up there like okay whatever that means i mean i know what spiritual warfare means but what's a mountain got do with it i was talking to a buddy of mine who was military and i was sharing that with him and he just got this big grin on his face i said wait what are you smiling at he's a man in training we're always trained to find the higher ground elevation gives you a posture and advantage over your enemy always always jesus went up to the mountain because he was getting elevated posture of elevation over the enemy thank you lord that's what i mean about listening and asking i learned to ask questions god show me what's going on in your word he loves that that's relationship that's relationship verse 24. moving on says but the boat was now in the middle of the sea toss by the ways for the wind was contrary another thing jumped out of the paint off the page when i read that out in the middle of the sea okay why'd you put that in there lord remember pastor greg tells us words have meaning in the bible they're out in the middle of the sea because you're most vulnerable out in the middle anybody here taking a cruise or been deep sea fishing i tell you it's a weird feeling when you see that shoreline get smaller and smaller and smaller then it just disappears and everywhere you look it's just ocean whew that's intimidating you feel really vulnerable and really small i like that so they felt vulnerable there that was important the boat was now in the middle of the sea tossed by the ways for the wind was contrary okay so here comes the storm storm's rolling in storm's rolling in onto 25. now in the fourth watch at night jesus went to them walking on the sea fourth watch of the night is between 6 a.m i mean 3 a.m and 6 a.m so once again i'm like lord what's that guy to do anything you know how creepy things get in the middle of the night you ever been home and heard a big noise at 3am and you stood up like whoa because things aren't supposed to be happening at 3am everybody's supposed to be asleep but you just heard a big crash outside in your driveway or something like whoa something's going on you get up you go look out the windows and you're freaking out it's the middle of the night things get a little scarier things get a little creepier so jesus is doing something here he's doing something here verse 26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were troubled saying it's a ghost and they cried out for fear i had a guy come up to me a week or so ago and he was struggling with this passage he goes understand hey how the disciples have the spirit of fear and they're all scared but they're supposed to be disciples and they're out on this water and it's crazy and they're all freaking out and i realized very quickly he didn't understand the difference between fear and the spirit of fear like oh they didn't have the spirit of fear see the spirit of fear is an actual spirit of oppression they didn't have that they were just scared scurred right they were scared being fearful is not a bad thing you always think of they're fearful being bad thing no having fear that's an emotion god created that's a good thing you know why because if i'm in a middle street and a city bus is headed my way full speed i'm going to have some fear and that fear is going to tell me get out of the way or if it's going to run me over so don't overthink that they were just scared they did not have the spirit of fear they were just afraid i'm gonna read 27 and 28 together but immediately jesus spoke to them saying be of good cheer it is i do not be afraid and peter answered him and said lord if it is you command me to come out on the water so once again lord i got a question why in here they're in a storm they're in a boat they're freaked out thinking they're gonna die so lord why'd you say hey be a good cheer why not hey don't trip out hey fear not hey i'm here why do you say be a good cheer well one time i went to pastor greg i said you know what if the lord tells me something but it's not in the bible but i just know i heard from the lord he said well start off with that and preach it anyway you're the one with the microphone amen praise the lord hello pastor greg so here i am i got the microphone so lord why'd you say be of good cheer all right i think jesus encompassed all of emotions he knew when to be angry he knew when to teach he knew when to be loving he knew when to be stern he knew when to be funny i've always thought jesus had to have a sense of humor he had to and the reason why i know that because he's a guy and in ironman let me tell you we have the best time we have a brotherhood that's awesome we eat we talk we laugh we especially laugh we pick on each other i got what okay praise the lord the the mouse is enjoying the message i scared of no mouse anyway that's funny though now we got to name it no really crank up the grill see that's the kind of stuff we do at iron man all right so at iron man we have a good time we laugh a lot we pick on each other always say if you're gonna come to iron man you better have a thick skin because we're gonna crack on each other if you get a new haircut we're gonna make fun of your new haircut this is what guys do we're just dudes right so i can only imagine jesus and his disciples they're doing some crazy stuff they're they're walking around from town to town doing ministry healing people you know it's just crazy times but you know when when they're chilling out when they're resting they got the campfire going they got some food going and cooking you know they're having a good time they're having a good time they pick with each other and jesus picks back i just know that he did doesn't ever say in scripture but i just know guys are guys we're going to pick with each other especially we love each other it's just to burnley hood things it's what we do so i think jesus is out there and he says be him could cheer in his eye do not be afraid i think that's why he said he's being funny well you know because it's part of his character but watch this it kind of answers itself since then peter answered him and said lord he didn't say hey i can't tell who that is out there but it kind of sounds like the lord no he just said lord why do you say that first of all because he knows the shepherd's voice and i also think secondly when he said be of good cheer that's something jesus would have said to the gang he's like not only do i know his voice he said be a good cheer that's not something jesus would say it's not scripture i just said i felt that's what the lord told me so i'm bringing that to you number point number two is know your shepherd's voice point number two know your shepherd's voice it's so vital in our walk with the lord do you know your shepherd's voice see peter did as soon as he said it is i he didn't give a name he did anything all he said was it is i of course and be a good cheer and he goes peter says that's the lord that's the lord all throughout scripture we are referred to a sheep and sheep need a shepherd amen we definitely need sheep i did some research on sheep sheep and shepherds it was it was amazing it was very interesting so way long time ago shepherds would have about a hundred sheep that was their responsibility they'd take them out early in the morning lead them out to some food and some water walk them around they would protect them because there's predators all around and sheep don't have claws or gnarly teeth they're not fast they just easy prey so they needed a shepherd to protect them and here's another thing the shepherd and sheep knew each other intimately because when a a sheep was born the shepherd would hold it and rock it and sing to it and talk to it and care for it and groom it that created a bond of those two it's just like us with our shepherd we're sheep we need a shepherd another thing i found out at the end of the evening shepherds would bring their 100 sheep to a paddock and it'd be this big place with a rock wall one door entry and about 10 shepherds would show up so you have a thousand sheep in this paddock he'd take him in in a paddock one of them would agree to stand at the the gate and protect the flock and the other nine would go back into town and find an end and sleep and then he'd come back that next morning now here's the cool part you got a thousand sheep in this paddock the shepherd would walk in that door and call his sheep and his hundred sheep knew that voice and they would come running the other 900 didn't know that voice they wouldn't come running do you know your shepherd's voice john 10 27 says my sheep hear my voice and i know them and they follow me peter knew a shepherd's voice then it says command me to come to you on the water he says be of good cheer it is i do not be afraid and peter answered him and said lord if it is you command me to come on the water he wasn't like saying if it's you like his question he knew his shepherd's voice but what he was doing said i need you to command me to do something that one person on this whole planet can command me to do and follow through with it that's the kind of shepherd i have that's what peter was saying peter knows the power of a command from the messiah peter is wise enough to ask jesus to command him to do something supernatural and that's to step out of the boat onto a liquid verse 29 so he said come and when peter had come down out of the boat he walked onto water to go to jesus oh there's a whole lot of meat on the bone on this one peter's at cro at a crossroads he says command me to come out jesus said okay come on right there peter said whoa time out just joking man just joking i was just seeing if it was you i just messing with you he's at a crossroads jesus all right come on step out of that boat roll it's my opinion that this is the apex verse of this whole story this is where peter is a hero and not a zero because that rascal steps out of the boat remember the boat was full of disciples only one called out to the lord only one called out to the lord he says come peter is okay here we go was peter afraid yes was peter probably nervous yeah did peter do it anyway yes does god ask you to do something that scares you say yes if god asked you do something that makes you nervous say yes then we do it anyway peter does something no other human has ever done he walked on water if i've got a group of us tonight and it's like let's go to percy uh percy priest lake and get a boat we're gonna pray really really hard we're gonna take turns stepping out of the boat onto the water we'll see who here has has the most faith right can you imagine that like like this let's make this real we talk about these stories and it seems so distant let's make it real let's go get a boat let's go do this i have a feeling i know how it would turn out second corinthians 5 7 says we walk by faith not by sight that's why peter's the hero he's like man okay my site says there's water right there peter's a fisherman he knows how this works he says i'm doing it gets out that's walking by faith has god ever commanded you to do something so point number three i have is obedience is imperative obedience is imperative i remember when suzanne and i first started coming to this church every church i've ever been to my favorite part about that church has always been the men's ministry i loved sunday service and all that the whole corporate worship thing but my favorite night of the week was whenever all the guys got together i always had a heart hang out with guys is maybe the athlete in me i love love the locker room i love the relationship with brothers i love the the team mindset let's go conquer them let's go win right so i elbowed this guy next to me when we first started coming here i said hey what night does the men's ministry meet he goes oh we don't have one i've never been to a church and didn't have a men's ministry i thought he was joking at her like seriously he goes no we don't have one like oh well that's a problem because boy i love the men's ministry so i started praying i said lord will you have pastor greg hire somebody else start a men's ministry and i prayed about it prayed about it because it was a void i had nothing so i changed my prayer i said okay well lord will you raise up somebody in this church that has a volunteering heart that will start a men's ministry that was on a tuesday wednesday night service pastor greg was preaching he was tearing it up like he does i'm on the edge of my seat loving life and he said something that changed my life because i'm going to be honest i'm going to be bold right now there's people in this room right now that god is calling to the ministry and you're being blatantly disobedient he might as well picked up a chair and put it on stage just had me sit there and just tell us all about it i knew that i knew that i knew he was talking to me i wish i could say oh i just jumped right into it no i pulled a jonah i ran like god god you gotta be crazy you got the wrong guy i can't pronounce half the words in the bible i have a major fear of public speaking i have a little bit of a reading disability you're not really wrong you know much but you're wrong on this one and i got convicted i said well you know i'm gonna go tell greg and maybe pastor greg well like said i don't know you very well and let me check check you out and maybe in somewhere up the road that'll be my out so i'll go to pastor greg says hey man that message you talked about the other night i felt like i was talking to me i feel like the lord's telling me to start a men's ministry he goes praise the lord i've been praying for that forever that plan didn't work so at the time i was playing drums on the worship team and uh we're at multiple services so i said you know i'm going to talk to the worship leader and maybe he'll say you know what i i you don't have time for that i need you on stage with me which would have been my out so i go up to him say hey man lord's telling me start a men's ministry he goes praise the lord so i started a men's ministry there's something about when you say you know what you let go and let god something moves in the spiritual realm i said god i'm not smart enough i don't have the talent god says i don't need your smartness i don't need your talent i just need your obedience that's all i need i fought with him i wrestled with him and finally i said okay i give up i'll start the men's ministry boom i was instantly elevated was i scared yes was a nervous yes but i did it anyway i witnessed a miracle because i started reading in god's word and it became crystal clear for the first time in my life i was able to comprehend reading like i've never done before not only did on not only that he started working on me and and showing me how to shape a message that was awesome too i wish i could say he took away my fear of speaking in public but that first night i had to hold on to the podium because i was shaking so much i didn't want nobody see it so i was clinging onto that pulpit but god says i can use that because of your obedience obedience is imperative i'm gonna read this verse again so he said come and when peter had come down out of the boat he walked on the water to jesus point number four is natural versus supernatural because the moment peter stepped out of the boat he stepped out of the natural world into the supernatural world it's supernatural to walk on top of fluid that's supernatural see cling onto the boat that's the world's realm stepping out on the water stepping into god's realm our realm and god's realm are nothing alike see natural things can be explained supernatural things cannot natural things are logical supernatural things are not logical natural things can be explained uh nope sorry to that again natural things can be are of this world supernatural things are not of this world it's kingdom see for too many people they get stuck in their boat their boat becomes their comfort zone their safe haven but guess what mediocrity and lukewarmness live in the boat you want the good stuff you got to get out of the boat you got to step into the supernatural you got to step into god's realm amen see it's on the outside of the boat you're gonna find your miracle it's on the outside of the boat you're gonna find your breakthrough it's on the outside of the boat you're gonna find your healing and restoration not inside the boat i love watching comedians i love stand-up comedy obviously the clean stuff you know our algorithms work you watch a couple comedians and they always kind of send you other comedians that are kind of the same genre well every now and then they'll throw a new one in and so i was watching some comedy i think i was waiting for suzanne to get ready so he come to church and i was way ahead of her as far as getting ready but i was watching some some comedians and this new guy popped up i thought check this guy out i'll i'll see what he's got first two jokes were really funny i think all right this is good third joke was not too funny his third joke was i have way too much common sense to believe in god then everybody cheered i couldn't hit that off button fast enough it made me angry what do you mean you have too much common sense to not believe in god i had some righteous anger going on so like i normally do i took it to the lord lord i'm upset he said i don't know why i said what do you mean you don't know why because you have common sense that's normal because i'm an uncommon god so you need to have uncommon sense to believe in me i had this epiphany you're right there's nothing common about my god my god's an uncommon god it takes uncommon sense to get it to figure it out see common sense will tell you stay in the boat clink to the boat there's a storm you're gonna die uncommon sense you know what while there's a storm just get out walk on the water that doesn't make any sense at all you got to step outside of the boat that's natural versus supernatural we got to get kingdom-minded all of that happens on the outside of the boat that's going to change somebody's life here tonight maybe you're doing some soul-searching in your seat right now and you're like you know what i'm stuck in the boat your breakthrough your miracle you're healing your restoration is on the outside of the boat is it scary yes will you be nervous yes do it anyway do it anyway verse 30 but when he saw that the wind was boisterous he was afraid and beginning to sink he cried out saying lord save me hmm this is a big deal of the story here's why i say this peter was walking on water i got set up a visual for you say these drums right here or the boat there's a storm going on in this sea and there's this guy way out there that they can't see but they can hear so i'm thinking if it's from here to that piano it still wouldn't be far enough out i'm probably thinking it was out about where that fan is way down there if i was out on the sea that'd be far enough out where i'm like i can't quite see that who there's somebody out there right just to give you a visual so peter steps out of the boat starts walking on the water i can imagine he gets out he's walking on the water i can see him like looking back his buddies check me out man you know the guys in the boat like whoa he's walking on water i can't believe my eyes i can't believe what's happening right this is a big moment very big moment but all of a sudden peter takes his eyes off jesus now here's what we always hear jesus peter took his eyes off jesus began to sink but what you don't hear is you know why he began to sink because he looked at the problem and hyper focused on the problem instead of the answer that was standing right in front of him he was hyper focused on the problem he was focused on a situation he was focused on a circumstance how many times do we do that cancer shows up oh we're hyper focused on cancer diabetes shows up you're hyper focused on diabetes your kids have gone crazy you're hyper focused on your kids jesus is like hey i'm right here i'm the answer you're looking at the problem instead of telling god how big our problems are we need to be telling our problems how big our god is ((music playing)) that's when things will change that's when things will move and of course all that's on the outside of the boat you know a tree buying fruit it bears right i know by your faith you're by your actions your actions tell on you this might step on some toes but pastor greg's rubbing off on me if you're worried you have faith in your storm and not in god because you're looking at the problem that's a big thing right there that'll change somebody's life stop looking at the problem and look at the answer it's all been paid for it's a done deal but satan didn't want you to know that amen but when he saw that the wind was boisterous he was afraid and beginning to sink he cried out saying lord save me the next point i want to make is called desperation activation because in that moment peter got really desperate really fast he took his eyes off jesus he starts to sink he's like i'm about to drown i'm about to die lord save me there was desperate desperation in his voice i had this principle that i like to talk about called desperation activation when you become desperate for whatever reason that draws the lord real quick into your situation god loves when we get desperate the problem i see with a lot of people they come to me like me i'm praying about this i'm going through that and and i'm just waiting for god show up i'm like dude you're not desperate enough you're not desperate enough you got to get more desperate i looked up the definition of desperation the definition of desperation is it's a state of despair which typically results in extreme behavior when i was in high school i live in an apartment complex i love this story this is desperation activation all the way there was a recreation area had a basketball goal at swing sets and a swim pool and that whole kind of thing at the apartment complex me and my buddies we'd always everyday 100 degree weather 100 humidity gather and play basketball we were crazy it was great to be young back then i couldn't do it that'd kill me we're out there playing basketball typical day we're just we're just hitting it and getting it as usual we were winning that's what's funny anyway all of a sudden this door opens up about three buildings down smoke flies out and this guy comes running out and says fire fire and he falls on the ground i look at my buddy kevin barrett i remember him to this day kevin barrett was in med school he was older than i was i was i was 16 he was probably 25. we didn't really say anything we just looked at each other and both he and i took off running the other guys just hung out at the basketball court whatever man kevin we were in down there and we get to the guy are you okay you're okay i thought maybe it's burned or something he said no but my wife and kid are upstairs asleep me and kevin looked at each other like we don't have time desperation activation it'll make you do crazy things we said let's go we were handed to a fire engulfed apartment ran up the stairs i took the first bedroom he went on to the other bedroom i saw a baby crib looked and there was a baby with a blanket i wrapped the baby up picked it up it only took like three or four steps down the whole flight of stairs i was skipping steps getting out of there that was fire everyone was hot smoke no visibility i break out into the clean air and fall on the ground with this baby and kevin's right behind me with this woman they were intoxicated he had fallen asleep with a cigarette had fallen in the couch surprised he didn't burn up because that was the first thing that caught on fire was the thing he was sleeping on but it's not normal running into an apartment it's engulfed with flames desperation is a state of despair which typically results in extreme behavior that was extreme behavior that day we got we got our names in the newspaper it was cool made me feel good but here's the funniest part and i had to tell you this part the apartment complex awarded me and kevin barrett uh for for saving the lives and everything and getting them all out of apartment they gave gave us potted plants well every 16 year old once right i'm like really they're like you know we're taking a picture of the newspaper and i'm holding this giant fern come on you could have bought me a video game or something a new basketball i don't know a fern that's the funniest part of the story yeah i can't ever tell that story and not tell that part it has nothing to do with this but it's funny i gave it to my mom she hung out on the back patio but that's desperation activation see when you get desperate you'll do things you normally don't do when you get desperate you'll pray harder you'll sing and worship louder when you're desperate you'll run faster to the altar you'll dig deeper into god's word the temperature changes when you're desperate some of us in this room tonight need to get more desperate some of us need to get more desperate because it'll activate god's hand to move in your situation desperation activation verse 31 we getting close and immediately jesus stretched out his hand and caught him and said him oh you have little faith why did you doubt you know i've always wondered i mean since i was a teenager lord how long did peter walk on that water i mean was it a couple steps and he crashed and burned was it 10 steps did he crash and burn you know sometimes when you read the bible you got to be a little bit of a detective that's what pastor greg says slow down and now i say it slow down don't read your bible study your bible and ask god to reveal stuff to you because if he he reveals stuff like i'm about to reveal now watch this peter walked a long way on the water and i can prove it all right remember here's the boat and jesus is way out there right he's walking on water walking on water walking on water he takes his eyes off jesus so i'm like all right lord how many steps did he make he said oh he fell at jesus's feet why do i know that because jesus didn't run over and save him jesus reached out and picked him up he was at jesus feet he walked a long way i'm like whoa that's an epiphany that answered my question thank you lord peter walked a long way on that water he did good he's not a zero he's a hero he did something no other humans ever done did he mess up yes but we all mess up that's part of the story it also shows god's grace but you like wait a minute he said oh you a little faith this is another epiphany too i should think man why did he say that why talk about kicking a man when he's down he's dying he's drowning he picks him says hey man you got no faith why did he do that for and the lord told me no no no no you're getting this all wrong he's not saying you don't have faith he's saying you didn't have faith in this situation see it took a lot of faith watch this bible doesn't ever contradict itself it took a lot of faith to step out of the boat and onto the water right so like all right if he has faith there why when he gets over here and stumbles he says you don't have any faith he wouldn't say you don't have overall faith he has a lot of faith he quit the fishing gig to go hang out with jesus and that's crazy that's uncommon sense right he gets out of a boat it starts walking on water more on common sense he's got a lot of faith if anything he's a pillar of faith he's a hero not a zero so jesus is upset and he says oh you have a load of faith he's talking about the circumstance how many times have we messed up and jesus is thinking oh you have little faith basically when he says oh you a load of faith jesus is like saying come on man really watch this why did jesus say peter you have little faith it's because this wasn't their first storm if you go a couple chapters back to matthew 8 23 watch this whole other storm whole other circumstance and suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea this is in matthew 8 23-27 and a great tempest arose on the sea so the boat was covered with waves they're in another storm a really bad situation but jesus was asleep i love middle that the storm man jesus is like chilling out he don't care he's sleeping and they say they awoke him saying lord save us we're perishing we bout to die but he said to them why are you fearful oh you have little faith you know they all had faith they all left everything had to follow him and do this crazy missionary ministry thing he's upset because their lack of faith in the circumstance and the situation then he arose and rebuked the winds and see hallelujah and there was a great calm so the men marveled saying who can this be that even the winds and sea obey him they've been through this before peter said no hey you know i'm the son of god i'm the messiah the winds and the seas they obey me why are you looking at the problem i've done this before shame on you come on in that moment i think jesus heart was broken he's like come on man what else have i got to do for you who god was peeling the onion on this study from me hallelujah so he raises peter up out of the water point number six without faith it is impossible to please god that's hebrews 11 6 but that's still my point without faith faith it is impossible to please god in that moment he became a double-minded disciple a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways especially when you're on top of water jesus was displeased with his lack of faith in that circumstance in that situation he said we we've been down this before this isn't our first rodeo come on man what else have i got to do i'm you see me preach you see me teach we're out here healing people you've seen it i'm the name above all names and you're looking at the problem come on you know i can stop this i can fix this right now just by speaking it but instead he rather look at the problem here's the sad thing all of us do the same thing that's why at the beginning i said how many people have seen god do something awesome how many people here seen the healing how many people seen that seeing god work this way how many people haven't tested my hands everywhere but let one storm roll in and oh we're hyper focused on the storm again you a little faith including me the guy holding the microphone i hope this is blessing somebody tonight because storms roll in they're inevitable none of us are immune to them jesus is telling someone here tonight owe you a little faith because this isn't our first rodeo so the next time a storm rolls in because it will your phone ring it'll be some bad news you'll get sick you'll have a financial debt your spouse might leave or you just are arguing a lot storm rolling in what are you going to do i'll tell you what you what you're going to do is not focus on the problem but focus on the answer amen so i'm going to wrap this up verse 31 says and immediately jesus stretched out his hand and caught him and said to him oh you little faith why do you doubt so he was right there jesus feet and when they got into the boat the wind ceased that's one of those things i pass over i've read that a gazillion times and i always just missed that like i cool the wind sees like oh wait a minute wait a minute no there's a lesson there because remember the last storm he commanded the winds and waves to to cease and they see say go who is this the even the winds and sees obey jesus is reminding him quiet susie steps in the boat everything goes quiet and they're all like oh we remember the last storm it was a reminder it was a reminder verse 33 then those who were in the boat came and worshiped him saying truly you are the son of god amen we serve such a big god our storm's going to roll in yes is he going to take him away no you know why because a lot of times during the storm we learn stuff we we get taught stuff he prunes us he elevates us he grows us storms have a purpose in fact in the last storm they go out into the storm jesus knew a storm was coming he could say hey guys let's hold back their storm coming in and just like no i got something to teach these guys let's keep rolling and the storm rolls in because i'm glad this is it's tumultuous out here it's boisterous i'm gonna do some teaching so i'm gonna roll it i'm gonna sum it up with this when your storm rolls in remember turn off the noise we get too distracted two listen to your shepherd's voice because he will talk to us scripture says my sheep hear my voice he wouldn't say it but we're going to talk to us so always pray god god give me ears to hear your voice and speak to me clearly and let me tell you we turn off the noise he gets loud number three obey even when it doesn't make sense step out of some water i don't know if i can do that try it anyway obey number four step out of your boat because then you're in your boat that's the worldly realm outside of the boat is the kingdom realm that's where you want to be number five get desperate man desperation activation there's nothing to move god's head more than when you get desperate when you cry and you you scream and you pound your fist you get on your knees come on you got to be desperate and number six you gotta have faith without faith we don't please god at all not one percent you gotta have it amen lord follow god we thank for tonight's message we thank you for your mighty word the two edges sword we thank you for the story there's a so much meat on the bone here so many lessons we can just take one and make a whole message out of it but lord i pray right now you give us wisdom and discernment when storms roll in our life or if we're in a storm right now speak to us teach us we need your strength and your power and not our strength and our power we need your wisdom and your discernment father god show us what to do and what not to do show us what to say what not to say it's all important lord i pray you just continue to bless all the families here tonight i thank you so much for for speaking through me and uh and i just pray uh travel mercies over pastor greg and ty and bring them back to us safely because we just love and adore them and and just hope they're having a blessed time and that you're just working in a mighty way in them and through them may they be your light in that place may they be salty in that place amen so lord we just ask you to continue to bless us shape us and modis unto the godly folks you'd have us be lord we're just chasing after you with everything we got and uh we just love you lord we love you lord love you lord and we just give it all to you in jesus mighty name amen all right you guys are just missed thank you hallelujah ((music playing)) you
