Don and I welcome you to the Walt Disney Concert Hall where we hope to give you a glimpse of heaven tonight. We don't have to gaze into the dome of a great cathedral to learn about heaven, only into the pages of a great book, the Bible. There we're told of a celestial city with gates of pearl and streets of gold and mansions for each resident. There we catch a glimpse of our eternal home where there is no more pain, suffering, sorrow, or death. A world without fear, war, crime, or hate. A place where there will be no more sad goodbyes. Tonight, we will imagine and articulate glimpses of heaven through song. We have assembled an amazing choir and orchestra and will be blessed by my special co-host, Sheila Walsh, and musical guests. I'm thrilled about this celebration because it centers on the best news in the world based on the authority of the word of God. There is a heaven. It is real. It is a place and God has described it for us in incredible detail in the Bible. He wants us to know about it, visualize it, imagine it, and prepare for it. We find descriptions of heaven from Genesis to Revelation and the closing chapters of the Bible provide a travel guide to our eternal home. The Bible reveals the mysteries of heaven and the Lord Jesus himself who ascended to heaven at the end of the gospels is preparing to come again for us take us there to live with him forever. Heaven is a precious place and we should anticipate it to the utmost. Amid anxiety, it consoles us. In sickness, it anchors our hope. And in poverty, it reminds us of our coming wealth. I can't think of a more appropriate way to turn our thoughts toward heaven than through music. The Apostle John gives us a glimpse into heaven in Revelation chapter 5 where tens of millions of believers lift perfect voices in a perfect song glorifying the perfection of our God and singing blessing and honor and glory and power be to him who sits on the throne and to the lamb forever and ever. Tonight we are going to practice for that day in heaven. Our exceptional musical guests and choir will lift their voices to God, all accompanied by this outstanding orchestra. So I invite you to sit back and take in the beauty of the music, the profound meaning of the lyrics, and imagine even savor these glimpses of heaven. I pray that through this presentation, God will speak to you, comfort you, encourage you, and even strengthen your resolve to live more effectively in this world as you patiently await the day when you will spend eternity in heaven with him. This, my friends, is a special night. So, as we begin this musical journey, let's remember and be reminded of another glimpse of our heavenly home. This time given to us by Jesus. He said, "Let not your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. In my father's house are many mansions, and if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there you may be also. Ladies and gentlemen, a glimpse of heaven. ((applause)) >> ((applause)) [singing] >> Sweet Sherry, [singing and music] coming for to carry [singing] me home. [singing] ((music playing)) ((applause)) ((applause)) Only a handful of [clears throat] songs are so iconic that everyone knows them. Many of them are secular and paint a picture of a life to come, one that is beyond this world and more peaceful and beautiful than we can comprehend. There's a reason these songs hold such a special place in our culture. Their words capture the longing of the human heart and express a deep yearning for a better place than we currently know. It's in the human DNA to long for a land that we've heard of. To ache for a place way above the clouds where the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. There's only one place like that. Ultimately, it's not America or Israel or any paradise on earth. It's the future God promises for his people, the land of heaven. There alone, our hopes will be fulfilled and every longing satisfied. In the meantime, heaven not only transcends our hope for the future, but it also reshapes how we experience the present. We can appreciate the best this world has to offer in light of the splendor and joy that awaits us in heaven. The beauty of a rainbow, the words of a song. Gifts like these point us to something greater when we view them from a heavenly perspective. As God's children, we know the truth, the reality that there will be a time for us, a place for us. We know that somewhere over the rainbow, there's a place being prepared for us. And in that land, our dreams really do come true. ((applause)) When all [singing] the clouds darken up the sky, there's a rainbow highway [singing and music] to be found. Leading from your [music and singing] window pain to a place ((music playing)) behind [singing] the sun, just a step [music and singing] beyond the rain. Somewhere over the rainbow way up high. There's a land that I've heard [singing] of once in a lawhere over the rainbow [singing] ((music playing)) skies are And the dreams that you dare [singing] to dream, they really do ((music playing)) come true. Someday [music and singing] I wish upon a star and wake up where the [music and singing] clouds are far behind me. [singing] Oh, ((music playing)) where troubles melt like lemon drops ((music playing)) away [singing] above the chimney tops. That's where you find [singing and music] me. >> ((music playing)) >> Over the rainbow. [singing] Blue birds fly. Birds fly over [singing] the rainbow. ((music playing)) Why then? ((music playing)) Oh, why [singing] can't I? If happy little [singing] bluebirds fly beyond [singing] the rainbow. Why? ((music playing)) Oh, [singing] I can't. I ((cheering)) >> ((applause)) ((applause)) >> The Bible tells us that heaven will be bigger, better, and more beautiful than we could ever dream. In fact, 1 Corinthians 2:9, Paul gives us a glimpse into heaven when he wrote, "I has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love him." We are finite creatures. He is infinite God. When we go beyond the limits of our understanding and comprehension, there is still infinitely more to realize. Even the Bible's amazing words about heaven in the book of Revelation were written by a finite apostle inspired by the spirit. The Apostle John described in human terms the visions of heaven. And it is fantastic. When we see it in person, the reality of it will go far beyond what John wrote. All considerations of heaven must begin with this promise. It will be greater than our biggest dreams, greater than our biggest desires because of who God is, including worship. John's writings in Revelation give us a glimpse into heaven where great worship services will take place around the throne of God. Many scholars believe that Revelation 4 and five are the two greatest chapters on worship in the whole Bible. They transport us to heaven and allow us to witness celestial worship as it unfolds before the very throne of God. As the Apostle John gazed at the majesty and beauty of the throne of his eternal creator, all he could comprehend was its diamondlike brilliance, its gemstone like beauty, and its stormy grandeur. If the door to heaven were to open for us today and we could see the throne of heaven, it would look the same now as it did then. It would thrill us with a joy that would never die. God is still seated on his throne. And his throne is a throne of glory and of grace. It's the heart and hub of all our worship both now and forever. In most of our worship services today, we have three integral parts. We praise God, we pray to God, and we preach about God. Yet, as I read Revelation, I'm stuck by the fact that worship rises to a higher level. It is a strange and interesting thing that when we reach heaven, only one of these three elements will remain throughout eternity. Preaching will be gone to my disappointment. And praying will be gone because we'll already have everything we need. According to the Bible, we will spend our time throughout the endless ages in praise and worship. Heaven will not be boring as it will be a profoundly satisfying, high energy, exuberant and infinite opportunity to know our God and to be filled with rapturous joy in his presence. So if we view music and singing and praising God and other forms of worship as an opportunity to come into the presence of a king in a way that both honors him and fulfills our own desires to express thanksgiving to God, then when we pass from earth to heaven, we'll just keep on doing the same thing only in a more vital and vivid way. If choirs and orchestras can elevate us to such heights of enjoyment on this earth, what will it be like when we hear the celestial choirs accompanied by heaventrained orchestras lifting praise to Almighty God around the throne? You see, worship in heaven will never be dull or half-hearted. Instead, it will be continuous, righteous, vigorous, thundering, and magnificent. It will set the atmosphere for the new heaven and the new earth. And it will make new Jerusalem pulsate with praise. ((applause)) >> ((music playing)) >> Hallelu. [singing] Hallelu. Today, we return now to the Music Cent's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles for A Glimpse of Heaven with David Jeremiah. ((applause)) Heaven comes with a list of respplendant joys and wonders. God's rewards in the afterlife that can only be described as magnificent. But in the meantime, we navigate life on this earth. Life seems more difficult than we can sometimes bear. Especially when we're stunned by grief, worried about loved ones, distressed over health and finances, or reeling from waves of fear. We long for joy in the morning. But sometimes we're trapped in the darkest night. However, there's one thing we know about the night. It is not permanent. We are not forsaken, not forgotten, not destitute, not detached. If we can lift our eyes heavenward and whisper a prayer in Jesus' name, we'll eventually see a glimpse of hope on the horizon. The Lord has a way of imparting grace when we need it most. He enables us hour by hour, moment by moment. He reminds us that our light and momentary troubles are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in heaven. We all want to go to heaven. But it's the getting there that can be trying. Until the day God calls us home, we will encounter pain, suffering, and sorrow. Sorrow may be the most difficult separation from those we love. The loss of a friend or loved one can be the deepest darkness known to God's people on earth. In pain, the psalmist cried out to God, "You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend." Perhaps tonight you're missing someone separated from you by death. a mother, a father, brother or sister, a child, an unborn child, maybe a special friend, teacher, or neighbor. When you arrive in heaven after Jesus, whom do you want to see next? [snorts] Most likely, you're thinking of someone in particular, someone waiting for you in heaven. Can you imagine the reunion you will have just inside those pearly gates standing on streets of gold? The truth of heaven not only provides anticipation regarding our future, but it also comforts us in regard to those who have gone before us. Heaven is already a heavily populated land filled with glorious residents, many of whom you will know. So whether it is pain, suffering, sorrow, or death, the word of God offers us hope in our darkest times, Revelation 21:4 tells us, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." One day our loving father will bring us home. And in that land there will be no more night. For we will live in the light of the risen one. If I had only [singing and music] known the last time would be the last time, I would have put off ((music playing)) all the things I had to do. I would have stayed a little [singing] longer, held on a little tighter. Now, what I'd give [singing] for one more day with you. Cuz there's a wound here [singing] in my heart where something's ((music playing)) missing. And they tell me that it's going ((music playing)) to heal [singing] with time. But I know you're in a place ((music playing)) where all your [singing] wounds have been erased. And knowing ((music playing)) yours are healed is healed in mine. The only scars ((music playing)) in heaven, [singing] they won't belong to me and you. ((music playing)) There'll be no such thing as [singing] broken. And all the [singing] old will be made new. And the thought that makes ((music playing)) me smile now [singing] even as the tears fall down. ((music playing)) Is that the only scars in [singing] heaven are on the hands that hold you now. I know the road you walked [singing] was anything ((music playing)) but easy. You picked up your share of scars along the way. Oh, but now you're [singing] standing in the sun. You fought your fight and your race is won. The ((music playing)) pain is still a million miles away. The only ((music playing)) stars from heaven, they won't belong [singing] to me and you. ((music playing)) There ain't no such thing is broken. ((music playing)) And all [singing] the old remain. And the father makes me ((music playing)) smile. Because if you haven't learned it already tonight, you perhaps know intuitively that without heaven, we are without hope. Sometimes, as I've read about the sinking of the Titanic, I've shuddered at the terror of those who stood on the deck that night, knowing that within a few hours they would perish in the dark icy sea. Their impending doom was not just a farway random thought. It dominated their minds and terrified their hearts. When a culture rejects God, it is on the deck of a sinking ship, waiting for the inevitable moment of coming doom. When we stand opposed to the teaching of scripture and insist there is nothing beyond the grave, we abandon hope. The band may play, the lights may flicker for a while, but nothing lies ahead but despair. What a change for us when we accept the biblical reality of heaven. It's a revelation of joy. It's the hope that anchors the soul. That is why Jesus told his disciples on the night of his arrest not to let their hearts be troubled. But as Jesus spoke those words in John 14, one man doubted them, Thomas. He listened as Jesus went on to say, "And where I go, you know, and the way you know." And Thomas said, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. So how can we know the way?" We're thankful for that question because it occasioned one of our Lord's greatest statements. In response to Thomas question, Jesus answered, "I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the father except through me." ((applause)) Those three words, way, truth, and life, tell us all we need to know about what we must do to go to heaven. We have a way to heaven. It's Jesus. We know the truth about getting there. It's Jesus. We have the sure hope of eternal life. It's Jesus. The important thing is to receive God's invitation by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Romans 6:23 spells it out for us. It says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." If you've accepted God's invitation and made your reservation for heaven, you have much to live for. Our earthly life is a preparation for our heavenly life. In fact, our eternal life has already begun. It began when we came to know God through faith in Jesus Christ. We must live today like we will live in eternity. Earth is a dress rehearsal for heaven. Heaven may seem like it's far away, but it isn't a distant reality. For the child of God, heaven is only a heartbeat away, a breath away, perhaps only a day or an hour away. And soon we'll be there. Wherever we go in the world, whatever blessings or burdens befall our lives, heaven is our sure and certain hope, a place prepared for us, a city whose builder and maker is God. And soon we'll be gathered at the Crystal Sea. Soon we'll be singing around the throne and involved in our Savior's work. Our Lord Jesus Christ has opened the gates and prepared the way and he beckons us to follow him. Not tomorrow or in the distant future today. We never know when we awaken in the morning whether we may be in heaven by nightfall. For life on earth is uncertain. But that shouldn't cause us to fear. According to the Bible, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Jesus told the dying thief on the cross, "Assuredly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise." Of course, I also believe the Lord may come at any moment and rapture us all to heaven together if we've put our trust in Christ. In either case, through death or rapture, we're closer now to heaven than we've ever been before. One day we will have more than just a glimpse of heaven. We will gaze at God's beauty and wonder for all eternity. Time will be no more and we will never cease to be amazed at the splendor of the new Jerusalem. Let us pray. Father, with all of our hearts tonight, we give you thanks for heaven. For the hope that it brings to our hearts, for the encouragement that it brings to us, especially those of us who have friends and loved ones already deposited there. Most of all, we thank you that heaven is a place where we will be with Jesus. How amazing it is to us to know that while we want to be with him, he wants us to be with him. How could that be? But it's true. And over and over again in the scripture, we run into that truth. God wants us to be with him. God wants you to be with him. And it's not too late to make your reservation. According to the Bible, when we trust Christ with our eternal life, he provides it for us. He gives us heaven as a free gift when we put our trust in him. So, however you are listening or watching or being involved in this program that we have presented this evening, my greatest hope is this, that I will see you someday in heaven because you have put your trust in Jesus Christ. If you have not done so, this is the time to do it. Amen. >> ((applause)) ((music playing)) >> Heat. ((music playing)) ((music playing)) Heat. ((music playing)) Hallelujah.
