Praying With the Spirit I'm so glad to be with you today and to minister the word of our precious Lord. Praying in the spirit and praying with the spirit. Oh yeah, I love this. And like always, to Jesus be all the glory for what he will show us today. And dear Lord, I thank you for your word. To you belongs all the glory, all the majesty in all the praise. Open our hearts we might see your precious word, Lord, and receive it. Teach us blessed Holy Spirit. Amen and amen. And God's people said, "Amen." Yesterday, I began teaching on prayer in the spirit. Today I want to continue and then teach on prayer with the spirit. But let's go back to Psalm 40. Want to read verse one right through verse three. I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined unto me and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the mighty clay, and set my feet upon a rock and established my going. Heath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God. Many shall see and fear and shall trust in the Lord. So when we wait on the Lord, he'll quicken us. And that's so important. Remember in Psalm 80 verse 18, David, King David said, "Quicken me and then I'll call upon your name." In fact, let's go back and see that one more time. Because some of you probably were not with me yesterday. So Psalm 80 verse 18, so will not we go back from thee quicken us and we will call upon thy name. So we wait till the Lord quickens us. But that happens as we wait on the Lord. I love what David also writes in Psalm 62 verse one. Truly my soul waiteth upon God. From him cometh my deliverance. From him cometh my salvation. As I wait, the Lord comes with deliverance. Comes with salvation. It's so wonderful. The minute you are waiting upon the Lord, you move from quietness to stillness. Remember I thought on that you move from quietness to stillness. In stillness you know him. Be still and know I am the Lord. It says in the Psalms. Now, something remarkable happens here because the Lord comes to meet with you, not the other way around. Remember I showed you a scripture from Exodus 25 verse 22. as you wait upon the Lord, he said, "And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat." So it is God who comes to meet with us, not us with him. Our job is to wait and then he will come to meet with you. He will come to commune with you. This is very important in Romans five uh in Romans 8 I should say 15 we'll read another beautiful portion here what it says for ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but you have received the spirit of adoption whereby we cry abba father so the holy spirit first comes before we can cry aba father we have to receive the spirit Yes. To come first before true prayer begins. Prayer in the spirit always follows waiting upon the Lord. And you all remember what what it says in Isaiah 40. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They will mount up with wings as eagles. Everyone who waits upon the Lord will receive discernment for the currents of the winds of the spirit. So as you're waiting, you begin to discern the winds of the spirit. And then you can surrender to the winds of the spirit and he carries you to the high places. So they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength and mount up. Waiting upon the Lord takes you higher to meet with God. Mount up with wings and eagles to meet with God. They shall run and not be weary. They'll catch up with God's plan for their life. They shall walk and how communion deta so it's very important to wait and waiting is difficult for some people but when you begin to do it it becomes easier and easier and easier. Now in Colossians 1:9, Paul makes an amazing statement because now he's talking to the church in Colasse. He says, "For this cause we also since the day we heard it do do not cease to pray for you and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding that he might walk worthy of the Lord." Now remember what Isaiah said, they shall walk. You come to a place where you're walking worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing. You are fruitful in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God. So walking with the Lord is a place of increase and fruitfulness, but also it's a place of spiritual understanding. It's a place of knowing his will. So when we talk about Isaiah 40, they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up to high levels in the spirit. Now because they were able to discern the wids of the spirit and surrender to the wind with wings as eagles, now they're going to catch up with what God wants them to do and wear guns where God wants them to be. And then they walk. Now fellowship is restored. But while they are walking, something is happening. They are walking worthy of the Lord. Verse 10, Colossians 1. They're pleasing the Lord. They're being fruitful in every good work. They're increasing in the knowledge of the Lord. So walking with God isn't just about fellowship. It's about growth. It's about being pleasing. It's about being fruitful. It's it's about getting to know him. You know how it is when you walk with someone, you get to know him better. Talk to him. That fellowship begins intimacy. But it says it's also a place where you'll be filled with the knowledge of his will. So praying in the spirit brings you to the place of the knowledge of his will. It puts a new light on first John 5:14. And this is the confidence which we have in him. Oh, this is so beautiful. Let's go to 1 John 5:14. You know, I love teaching in the Bible. I think a lot of you uh want to go deeper in the Lord, deeper in scripture. So in five uh in 1 John 5:14 it says, "And this is the confidence we have in him if we ask anything according to his will because you're in the spirit now. You know his will." It's impossible to know God's will in the flesh. It's impossible to know God's will when people pray in the flesh. Look, our prayer list is very short. Very short. A natural prayer list is very short. So be anxious for nothing and everything with thanksgiving being let your requests be made known. That's a very short list. That's why it says, "Let your words be few in Ecclesiastes." Because when you approach God, there's not a whole lot to say because he knows your need before you ask. So it says, "Let your words be few." And the Lord spoke of those who talk a lot in prayer and the one man who said Lord have mercy and who went justified you know so uh we we're in the presence of God we have to choose our words when it comes to the natural to the natural but when you you're in the spirit because you've waited now you're in the spirit and you know when people pray in the natural control. They get tired. It's hard work. They yawn. They fall asleep. They get distracted. Well, that's not praying in the spirit. That's praying in the natural world. And frankly, praying in the flesh, which God will accept because it says, "Let your requests be made known. Let your requests be made known with thanksgiving. With thanksgiving, let your requests be made known." So God understands you have problems. You want to bring them to him. That's fine. But that's not prayer in the spirit. Prayer in the spirit is the kind of prayer that will transform you completely. And then it brings you somewhere else. You know, people that don't pray in the spirit always apologize in prayer. They're always apologizing and and and because they they they don't see clearly. They don't see clearly. I love what Job and I shared that with you yesterday. Job 34 uh 32. It says, "That which I see not, Lord," he said, "teach me. That which I see not, teach thou me." Because there's a lot of things we don't see till we're in the spirit. And then God will teach us. So this is important. Now, when we're in the spirit, we endure. Why? Because we see the one who is invisible. Only in the spirit can you see Jesus when you pray. You cannot see Jesus when you're praying in the flesh. This is where you struggle and you fall asleep and you you're drowsy and you get distracted from all kinds of things. But Hebrews 11:26, and I've shared this with you, and I'm I'm I'm about to switch and talk about praying with the spirit and show you how beautiful that flows in Hebrews 11. And let's look look together at verse 26 because this is such a powerful verse. It says here that Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt. For he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. Oh, how I wish I can talk about this. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. I believe that Moses had a revelation of the cross, but that's a whole different teaching. I'm going to not even talk about that now because this is so powerful. That's why it says what it says here. But he he endured because he saw the Lord. Now, why tongues? All right, that's prayer with the spirit. I've had moments and you've had moments when our tongue, in other words, praying in tongues is heavenly. It's not just repetitious. It's a real language. I've heard people, you know, who repeat certain words and they say, "Well, I'm praying in tongues." You know, praying with the spirit is the most blessed experience. And only God knows what's real and what is not real. Now, I'm going to show you the results because if these results are not happening, then it's not true prayer with the spirit. So when you wait on the Lord, when there is union with the Lord, when you see him, you're in a new realm, it's you're not in the flesh anymore. Prayer with the spirit, please hear this. True prayer with the spirit is born out of prayer in the spirit. Otherwise, it's not true prayer with the spirit. So, praying in a heavenly tongue is the result of an a a new infilling. It's the result of the Holy Spirit making Jesus real because now you're in the spirit. Do you notice how sometimes when you've been in the presence of the Lord even the the praying in tongues sounds different and it has weight with it and the presence of God is there in you and there's a change otherwise you it's very noisy people repeat themselves no this is true tongues on the day of Pentecost now remember There's three kinds of tongues in the Bible. On the day of Pentecost, they spoke a language known to other nations. In Acts two, for example, beginning at verse four and through six, they understood them. So that's the first tongue which is assigned to the unbeliever. But then you have another which in first Corinthians 14. Oh, this is so awesome. And I want to I want to go with you there. Let's go to verse one. It says, well, let me just read the whole thing. Follow after charity or love and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that he may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto man, but unto God. For no man un understandeth him, how in the spirit. Ah, watch this. It says in the spirit, he speaketh mysteries. You cannot be praying in tongues, not being in the spirit. A lot of people pray in tonesues or in the flesh. And that's why it's not really tongues. It's just gibberish. It's just noise. They're just saying something that is not the spirit of God at all. I'm I'm sorry to be so honest. I think you know that I'm I'm I'm telling you the truth now. You've heard it and I've heard it. Some just say it's tongues. Only God knows if it's tongues. But real tongues is in the spirit. He speaketh mysteries. It says in the spirit. His spirit now is connected with the Lord. the Holy Spirit is is praying through him in a heavenly language. And now something amazing that we see that how there's a third tongue. So, so Acts 2 verse 4-6, it was a language known on earth assigned to the unbeliever as Paul also writes in this chapter. Now, here's one tongue that is mysteries that no man understands. It says because it says he's speaking mysteries unto God in the spirit. Wow. But then in in in in the same chapter beginning at verse 26, it says that there's a third tongue which is for edifying the church. How is it then, brethren, when you come together, every one of you have a psalm, hath a doctrine, had a tongue, hath a revelation, had an interpretation. Let all things be done unto what? Edifying. So it says if any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two or at the most by three and let one interpret. So that is equal to prophecy. It's very important. Now the purpose then of praying with the spirit which is born out of praying in the spirit is for what? Edification. We edify ourselves and edify the church. And so it says in verse four uh 1 Corinthians 14 it says he that speaketh let's just read it together. Verse four, he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifith himself edify edifith himself for he that and but he that prophesies edifies the church. So we see that it's for edification. And in verse 5 it says that tongues aids in prophecy. But here's something else about tongues that a lot of people don't know. and and tongues that is born born out of the spirit. Isaiah 28 11 and 12. This is really awesome. It says, "For with a stammering lips and another tongue will will he speak to this people to whom he said, this is the rest wherewith he may cause the weary to rest." But it's interesting. It says that he speaks to this people. It's God speaking and it says that this is where we receive rest. It's a place of refreshing in the spirit. We get refreshed and find rest in the spirit when we pray with the spirit. So it's not just for edification. It's also for rest and refreshing. Oh, I've had that and you've had that. We've been so strengthened. I will never forget in Jerusalem years ago when I was ministering and at a at a conference and John or not, dear John was with me. We had a group of people because I was preaching at the Holy Spirit conference in Jerusalem 1978. And I said to John, I said, "Let me stay on the bus." This was at the diplomat hotel. So, let me stay on the bus. You all go in, you know, John Arnach had the great move of God in Canada called the Toronto Blessing. He and I used to work together years and years ago in Canada. And I said, "You take all the people in." And I said, "Johnny, I'm going to stay on the bus and pray." And the Lord was with me all day. In fact, Avera Tommpkins, who was a powerful woman of God, I was walking in the lobby praying that day and she said, "Benny, I see the Lord in your eyes." It was so such a precious moment for me. But anyways, she was the sister of a man named Judson Cornwall who wrote some amazing books on worship. Oh, precious people of God. I miss them so much. All of them, frankly. Well, anyways, so on the bus, I begin praying with the spirit and it was so powerful. That was one of the most amazing times when I was young. And when I walked into the service with 4,000 people or some were there in that ballroom, the power of God was so incredible. That was in 1978 because you know praying with the spirit is born out of being in the spirit and praying in the spirit produces praying with the spirit and it's a it's a time of refreshing and strength and on that bus I felt incredible heavenly strength come into my body and mind. That's why it says refreshing rest. But here's something else. It also ignites worship because it says in 1 Corinthians, I'm almost done, so don't leave me. In fact, I may even go over a little bit. Hallelujah. I love this. In 1 Corinthians 14, verse 14 and 15, Paul says something amazing. He says, "Not only will I," well, let me just read it. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, my understanding is unfruitful. So it's not the flesh praying, it's the spirit praying. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding. Meaning pray in English that you know what you're saying to God. I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding. Well, singing is worship. And often when you when you're singing to the Lord and the Holy Spirit has taken over your being and your your your in that heavenly place, it ignites worship. Now, here's something most remarkable. most remarkable, the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Okay, let's read it. Ephesians 5:18. I'm going to show you just a few scriptures here that one of them you probably don't even maybe you haven't paid attention to in the Psalms, but let me just read verse 18 and 19. Uh Ephesians 5. Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, be filled with the spirit, speaking to yourselves in what? Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. What are spiritual songs? Songs of the spirit. Songs that are not in English. Spiritual songs. And it says singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. So speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns. Well, hymns is singing, but then also spiritual songs. Singing spiritual songs is singing in the spirit, singing in a different language, in a heavenly language. And here's what h what what happens when you begin singing in that heavenly language. It confuses the enemy completely. Isaiah 30 talks about that. That's why singing in the spirit or with tongues is important. in in Isaiah 30. Yeah. Lord, I feel they know he's just talking about this. It says, "Ye shall," this is verse 29, "he shall have a song as in the night when the holy solemnity or feast is kept and gladness of heart as when one goes goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the Lord." Mountain speaks about God, government to remind the one of Israel. And the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, meaning that he will be singing through his church, which I'll show you in the Psalms in just a second. And shall show the lightning down of his arm with the indignation of his anger, with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering and tempest and hailstone. For through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down. That's the enemy which smoked with a rod. And it says, "And in every place where the grounded staff will pass, which the Lord shall lay upon him, it shall be with tablets and harps, and in battles of shaking will he fight with it. God will scatter, confuse, and scatter the enemy when the song of the Lord begins." So praying in the spirit, you wait on the Lord, you pray in the spirit. Now you begin praying with the spirit mean praying with your heavenly language. And now you sing with your heavenly language. And when you sing with your heavenly language, it scatters the enemy. And in Psalm 22, oh Lord, I give you praise for this. You know, Psalm 22 is known for prophecies on the cross, and I agree, of course, it's all all throughout. But look what what it says in verse 22 of the same psalm. So, in Psalm 22, it begins it begins verse one, you know, my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me? And they have pierced my hands and my feet later. But look what it says in verse 22. I will declare thy name unto my brethren. In the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. God sings over his people. How? When you start singing in tongues, God's spirit is singing through you and the enemy is scattered. You know, we don't see a whole lot of that anymore in the church. We saw it in the charismatic renewal years ago in the 70s. We need to see singing in the spirit in churches. Again, we rarely see it. Rarely see it. You know what is so remarkable? That when people sing in the spirit, you hear the Gregorian chant in it. That is amazing to me. The Gregorian chant is the chant of the of the church in the early days. That's why you you still hear today in the Greek Orthodox churches and even some Catholic churches, you hear the Gregorian chant that goes back to the early church. And when people sing in tongues, you hear the same melodies coming out. Gregorian ch, you know, the Gregorian chants. I'm amazed by that. because I grew up in it. I grew up in it. May the Lord bring it back. May the Lord bring it back to the church. If you will just wait on the Lord in your own room, in your own home, and wait till he quickens you, and then let him let him take over. Let the prayer of the spirit begin through you rather than in your prayer. Let communion begins on that high level of heavenly you know high places as the Bible called and watch what will happen to your spirit man. Do you remember what we just read earlier in in Psalm 40:3? He put a new song. It says that's the song of the spirit. Let me just finish with that and then I'll pray with you. I really feel I need to pray right now that God will baptize you with the Holy Spirit all over again. And he hath put a new song in my mouth because you've waited. Verse one, I waited. Verse two, he brought me out of a horrible pit. And verse three, he put a new song in my mouth. Even praise unto God. Many will see it and fear and trust in the Lord. Imagine that a song will cause people to trust in the Lord and fear. Wow, that's something, you know, many will see it and fear and trust in the Lord. That shows deliverance, too, by the way. Lord, I give you praise. Why don't you just stretch your hands? I'm really feeling this. Ask God to baptize you right now in the Holy Spirit. Lord, baptize every one of them. Fill every one of them. Empower every one of them. Your word says, "Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Speak into yourselves in songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melding your hearts unto the Lord. Fill each one now, Lord, who's calling on you aresh with the Holy Spirit. Empower them to serve you. Empower them to walk with you. Empower them to worship. And ignite that love in them. Inflame their hearts with new love that will never die. For you, Lord. For you. love for you and only for you. Use them to glorify your holy name. Fill them now. Be filled. Be filled. Be filled with the Holy Spirit in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. I'm telling you, you wait on the Lord today and you watch what God will do. I'm telling you, I I I didn't know all this would happen today. I'm so glad I thought on this. So glad. Thank you for being with me. Thank you, Lord. I give you praise. Come on. Can we just pray the Lord? Lord Jesus, I give you praise. I give you praise.
